Chuback adds men’s title to Tamarack resume

WASAGAMING — Grady Chuback called the shot of the tournament.

After five sloppy holes in a row, with no signs of anything changing, he decided to take dead aim at the pin on the par-3 12th hole at Clear Lake Golf Course.

“I said, ‘I’m going to hit this within two feet.’ I knew it,” said Chuback, who did exactly that.

“I knew exactly where I wanted to play it and it worked out.”

Oakden handles nerves, captures junior crown

WASAGAMING — Hunter Oakden felt his nerves build through the home stretch.

He was so close, just four good holes away from a Tamarack golf tournament junior title.

In the end, it came down to one four-foot downhill putt on one of the trickiest greens in Manitoba.

Oakden tapped it and let gravity do the rest.

WASAGAMING — Keith Fawcett wasn’t necessarily expecting to reach another Tamarack golf tournament final, much less take the commanding lead he did on Saturday.

He figured Dale Murray would give him a run, and did he ever. The Gilbert Plains Country Club member roared back from 3 down with four to play to force a playoff. But Fawcett, who knows Clear Lake Golf Course as well as anyone around, bounced back to par the first playoff hole and claim the masters men’s title for the third time on Saturday.

“I didn’t think I’d get to 18 with him because he’s a very good golfer and a nice guy,” Fawcett said.

“Just my lucky day, I guess.”

WASAGAMING — Grady Chuback has been itching for this moment and everything that comes with it.

The 19-year-old tees it up in his first Tamarack golf tournament men’s championship final today at Clear Lake Golf Course after growing up around the event and finally graduating from the junior ranks this year.

On Friday, he defeated Onanole native Cal Vanderschuit 5 and 4, while Ross Sheard downed Dustin Dyck 4 and 3 in the other semifinal.

While there were just a few people following along, that’ll change today as the final typically features hundreds of spectators by the end of the match.

WASAGAMING — Tragedy struck the Tamarack golf tournament on Tuesday when a player died on the 18th hole at Clear Lake Golf Course.

Gudbrandur Gudbrandsson, 42, collapsed on the tee box after hitting his shot, and did not survive despite the efforts of many golfers who stepped up in attempts to save him.

“It was just tragic, for him and his family,” said Tamarack president Jason Curtis. “Very heartbreaking to those involved, and traumatic for those around that worked on him, that gave their best and did their all to give him a fighting chance.”

Gudbrandsson was playing in the same group as David Glenn, a doctor based out of Brandon, who immediately jumped in and co-ordinated efforts to perform CPR.

WASAGAMING — Ross Sheard stood on the seventh tee box just a few swings away from a familiar fate.

Two holes later, he was in complete control.

For the first time, the Brandonite is off to the semifinals at the Tamarack golf tournament after a 1-up win over Darren Ritchie at Clear Lake Golf Course on Thursday.

“Certainly a lot to learn from and build off of. First quarterfinal on the A-side, I was nervous right from the start,” Sheard said.

WASAGAMING — Bruce North is playing golf with a heavy heart and a lighter perspective on the game this year.

The seven-time Tamarack men’s champion is back in the masters men’s semifinals after a 3-and-2 victory over Rod Lindenberg on Wednesday, though it was tough to stay fully focused.

While he worked his way through Clear Lake Golf Course, his wife delivered a eulogy he wrote at his brother-in-law’s funeral.

“Here’s the absolute reality of it. I lost five friends since December that I was involved in a eulogy,” North said. “Being out here is an absolute pleasure. Yes, you focus and you try your best, but at the end of the day, it really is not that important at all.

ONANOLE — The future of the Tamarack golf tournament looks as promising as ever.

On Wednesday, a record 101 golfers aged five to 12 teed off in the Cubs event at Poplar Ridge Golf Course.

“Just to see the smiles on their faces is awesome, and for some of the kids, this is their favourite part of the Tamarack, obviously,” said Tamarack president Jason Curtis.

“They watch their parents play, mom or dad, but then they get to have their day. We were thankful the weather turned out OK.”

WASAGAMING — Cal Vanderschuit isn’t just a Tamarack golf tournament fan favourite anymore — he’s simply a favourite.

When he made the championship flight for the first time in 2019, the conversation around Clear Lake Golf Course was, “Cal’s in it?”

Now, it’s, “Cal could win it.”

The 34-year-old member of the host club beat Carter Sawchuk 7 and 5 in the first round of matches on Tuesday, the most dominant victory of the day.

WASAGAMING — Deja vu hit Greg Misener at the worst time.

He missed a short putt on the 16th hole and felt his nerves get the best of him on the 17th. Suddenly, he went from comfortable to the brink of elimination at the Tamarack golf tournament.

But just like Sunday’s qualifying round, the Clear Lake Golf Course member made an ultra-tough breaking putt for birdie on the 18th hole to avoid a playoff.

On Tuesday, it was to beat No. 2 seed Nolan Tutkaluk 1 up in the first round of the championship flight, the biggest upset of the day.

He gained a life partner, while Fulton gained a golf partner.

And they’ve developed into quite the team. Fulton and Matthews carded a 3-over 77 in ladies scramble qualifying at the Tamarack golf tournament on Monday, good for the No. 2 seed in the championship flight.

“I married into it for sure,” Matthews said of how she picked up the sport.

WASAGAMING — Jaxon Jacobson did what he hopes to do at least once more this year: beat some of his best friends.

The Brandon Wheat Kings forward shot a 3-under 69 at Clear Lake Golf Course on Monday, edging Everett Silvertips teammates Cole Temple by one and Kaeson Fisher by three.

For the first time, Jacobson is the Tamarack golf tournament junior medallist.

“It’s pretty cool. It was a comfortable environment to play in here with two buddies, but it gets more important here on out,” Jacobson said. “I’ve been in champ flight a couple of times but haven’t had my way, so we’ll try to get it this year.”

While there won’t be a repeat champion in the Tamarack golf tournament men’s event this year, two men are vying for the trophy after winning other divisions in 2024.

Chris Knoop didn’t sign up after his impressive run to the men’s title last year due to family commitments. But the field still features plenty of proven winners.

Grady Chuback has graduated from the junior ranks after back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, while two-time masters men’s winner Ron Cornell decided to test his game against the best this year.

They begin qualifying for the 92nd annual match play tournament at Clear Lake Golf Course today with extra excitement.
