Tigers end Wheat Kings streak

By Perry Bergson 6 minute read Yesterday at 11:24 PM CST

The Medicine Hat Tigers overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to beat the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 7-3 in a matchup of two of the hottest teams in the Western Hockey League at Co-op Place on Wednesday.

Medicine Hat (22-6-3-2) received its goals from Noah Davidson, Kyle Heger, Liam Ruck, Ethan Neutens, Bryce Pickford, Tyson Moss and Jonas Woo, with Jaxon Jacobson, Nick Johnson and Carter Klippenstein replying for Brandon (18-12-1-0) in front of a crowd of 3,006.

Going into Wednesday’s game, Brandon was on a seven-game winning streak and Medicine Hat hadn’t lost in regulation in their last 13 games, going 11-0-1-1. The Wheat Kings had won the first two games in the season series, with one meeting remaining in Brandon on March 4.

Wheat Kings head coach and general manager Marty Murray said his club, which was playing its third game in four days and fifth in the last eight days, seemed to hit the wall.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Justin Faulk scored and Joel Hofer made 24 saves to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 1-0 win over the stumbling Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.

Hofer earned his third shutout of the season and the fifth in his career in the first meeting between the Blues and Jets since Winnipeg beat St. Louis in double overtime on May 4 in game seven of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves for Winnipeg, which has lost five of its last six contests.

Faulk scored his eighth goal of the season on a feed from Robert Thomas with 6:43 remaining in the second period to give St. Louis the lead.

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 9:47 PM CST

KITCHENER - Brady Martin scored twice as Canada defeated Sweden 2-1 in pre-tournament action for the world junior hockey championship Wednesday.

Gavin McKenna, a projected top pick in next summer's NHL draft, provided two assists and Carter George made 19 saves for Canada.

Viggo Bjorck replied for Sweden and Herman Liv stopped 24 shots at Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Martin, drafted fifth overall by the Nashville Predators last June, opened the scoring on a one-timer from distance off a cross-ice pass from McKenna just 39 seconds into the second period.

Worthington, Stewart medal at Junior A Challenge

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 5 minute read Yesterday at 9:38 PM CST

Brandon’s Colten Worthington and Ethan Stewart repped the Maple Leaf well.

The pair of hometown products are coming off a podium finish in Trois-Rivières, Que., after helping Canada West to its first silver medal in the World Junior A Challenge since 2012 — when they fell in the final to the United States in Yarmouth, N.S., with a 6-3 loss.

History was much of the same this time around. Worthington, Stewart, and company ran into their familiar rivals south of the border in the gold-medal game and dropped a 5–1 decision, and while the result may have stung, earning silver at a tournament featuring some of the top talent in Junior A is nothing to sneeze at either.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Stewart, who tallied one goal and four points through five games with Canada West. “Getting a chance to win a gold medal was super cool for sure, and getting that silver medal is pretty awesome too.

Reports: A Chicago-based investment group is nearing a deal to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 7:27 PM CST

A family-owned, Chicago-based investment company is closing in on a deal to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins from Fenway Sports Group.

Multiple outlets, including Victory Sports and ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that the Hoffmann Family of Companies is nearing the final stages of an agreement to purchase one of the league's marquee franchises. Any purchase would need to be approved by the NHL's Board of Governors, though that is often merely a formality.

The financial details have not been released, though the Penguins were valued at around $1.7 billion recently by Forbes.

The sale, if completed, would end FSG's brief run as stewards of the five-time Stanley Cup-winning franchise. FSG, which owns Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox and Liverpool of the Premier League, agreed to purchase the Penguins from Ron Burkle and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux in late 2021

Drew Doughty had the same digit stitched on his back since junior.

The Los Angeles Kings defenceman got No. 8 to match his birthday when he joined the Ontario Hockey League's Guelph Storm and kept it after making the NHL. Doughty, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist, wore the same number 19 combined seasons — until he didn't partway through his 20th.

Cale Makar was an early inclusion for Canada's roster at last February's 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. The Colorado Avalanche defenceman also wears No. 8.

Doughty, who turned 38 on Dec. 8, also eventually made it to the team. Locker-room seniority meant he should have gotten first pick, but there was a problem.

Goaltender Fowler distraught with costly miscue in Montreal debut

Jordan Stoopler, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:00 AM CST

MONTREAL - It is often said that hockey is a game of mistakes.

Montreal Canadiens rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler readily admits he made a pretty costly one on the Philadelphia Flyers' third goal of Tuesday night's game, scored with under a minute to play in the second period.

Fowler misplayed the puck behind his own net, allowing Flyers forward Matvei Michkov to recover the loose puck. The Russian would find linemate Bobby Brink in the slot for the goal, ensuring the Flyers entered the second intermission with a 3-1 lead.

“You just learn from it,” said Fowler. “I haven’t given up many of those in my career. Hopefully, that’s the last one. Learn from it, get back on the ice tomorrow (Wednesday) and move forward.”

TORONTO - For 50 minutes, it seemed like nothing could get the Toronto Maple Leafs to play with any kind of urgency. Not head coach Craig Berube yelling at them, not the fans at Scotiabank Arena booing them.

Defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 9:59 left to play — shortly after another round of booing — and then Auston Matthews and Dakota Joshua had goals eight seconds apart as the Maple Leafs rallied to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday as Toronto essentially won the game in its final 10 minutes.

Joshua and Matthews said they didn't blame the crowd for getting down on the Maple Leafs after they came out flat, especially in the first period.

"If I was a fan, I wouldn't have been too happy with the performance either," said Joshua, who batted in a juicy rebound given up by Chicago goalie Spencer Knight for the game-winning goal. "So, you know, no surprise there, but at the end of the day, nice to pull that one out for them."

Third-period goals by Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Matthews and Joshua erased Toronto’s two-goal deficit and completed a wild comeback.

Joseph Woll made 23 saves and the Maple Leafs earned just their second victory this season after trailing after two periods.

Wheaties hang on to tame Rebels

By Perry Bergson 7 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 1:18 PM CST

The Brandon Wheat Kings finally closed out a game in Red Deer, beating the Rebels 2-1 in Western Hockey League action at Marchant Crane Centrium on Tuesday to win their seventh game in a row.

Brandon (18-11-1-0) received its goals from Joby Baumuller and Jimmy Egan, with Ty Coupland replying for Red Deer (10-17-1-2) in front of a crowd of 3,015.

It had been more than three years since the Wheat Kings won in the building, a 4-2 Brandon victory on Nov. 19, 2022. They lost the last five games by either one or two goals, twice by goals in the final minute.

Brandon head coach and general manager Marty Murray said it was nice to leave Red Deer with two points. The game may have turned on a call by the video goal judge, a fate that wasn’t as kind to the visitors a year ago.

Wheat Kings feel future is bright

By Perry Bergson 16 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025

If the future is set to shine for the Brandon Wheat Kings, the team’s young prospects will need to thrive.

Brandon’s director of hockey operations Chris Moulton recently went through every drafted and listed player on the team’s 50-man roster to assess how their play has been as the season nears its midpoint.

The following is organized by draft class and then listed players: Players who have already made the jump to the Wheat Kings aren’t included, nor is anyone who has been released. The heights and weights are from Wheat Kings camp unless the player didn’t attend. If a player is skating in AAA and were called up for junior games in any league, those numbers are included too.

For goalies, L or R is whether they catch with their left or right hand: For players, it’s which way they shoot.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Macklin Celebrini scored a jaw-dropping goal and added an empty-netter and two assists to become the fastest San Jose player to reach 50 points in a season as the Sharks beat the Calgary Flames 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Celebrini assisted on two goals in the first period and then took over the game in the third. First he took a pass from Collin Graf, spun without breaking stride and beat Dustin Wolf for his 17th goal of the season to make it 4-2.

The empty-netter put it away, giving the 19-year-old Celebrini 51 points in San Jose's 34th game of the season. That's three games faster than any other Sharks player reached the 50-point mark, with Erik Karlsson, Joe Thornton and Owen Nolan all doing it in 37 games. The only teenagers to reach 50 points earlier in an NHL season were Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky.

Barclay Goodrow had two goals, John Klingberg also scored for San Jose, and Tyler Toffoli got his 300th career goal.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — For the first time in NHL history, goalies that were involved in the same trade faced one another within seven days of the deal.

Tristan Jarry and Stuart Skinner, traded for one another just five days ago, starred against their former teams as Edmonton defeated Pittsburgh 6-4 on Tuesday night.

“I thought both goalies handled themselves well,” said Connor McDavid, who scored twice and had a four-point game. “It was a unique situation and probably a strange night for both guys.”

On Friday, the Oilers dealt Skinner, defenceman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Jarry and forward Sam Poulin. Both goaltenders were unable to have new masks ready in time for Tuesday’s game. Jarry wore blue goalie pads and his Penguins’ mask, while Skinner had white and gold pads and his old Oilers’ mask.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Leon Draisaitl had four assists and became the fourth-fastest active player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Draisaitl, who hit the milestone in the first period on a secondary assist, became the 103rd player in NHL history, first German-born player and fifth in franchise history to reach 1,000 points. He has 416 goals and 587 assists in 824 games for 1,003 points.

Connor McDavid scored twice, including a spectacular power-play goal and added two assists, as he and Draisaitl improved to 23-0-0 when both have at least three points in a regular-season game.

Evan Bouchard and Zach Hyman each added a power-play goal and an assist, while Matt Savoie and Vasily Podkolzin also scored for the Oilers, who have won six of their last nine.

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 9 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025

The Brandon Wheat Kings couldn’t have possibly had a better first half of the season — well, at least on paper.

The last undefeated team remaining in the Winnipeg U15 AAA Hockey League is now up to 16 wins to lead the entire league, yet head coach Dave Lewis still isn’t satisfied with the status quo — he believes his team has more to give and insists on pushing the standard until his club wins what matters most — the last game of the season.

“Obviously, the record is one thing, but more importantly, we’re always trying to look at benchmarks of where we are. The record is not as important as the growth that we see throughout the course of the season,” said Lewis. “I think we’re pretty happy with where we are, but our goal certainly isn’t to go undefeated this year, our goal is to win a provincial championship because in the end, all people remember is who won the last game of the year.

“If we lose some games along the way and we learn some things from losing, that’s OK. But, we can’t lose because we weren’t prepared or we weren’t willing to work. There’s certainly a lot of room for improvement yet, and as the season goes on, the games always get tighter and get better.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Evander Kane and Liam Ohgren scored and Thatcher Demko made 23 saves as the league-worst Vancouver Canucks defeated the New York Rangers 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Conor Garland added an empty-net goal as Vancouver, which had won only three of its previous 12 games, smothered the Rangers from start to finish. New York is 4-10-3 at home.

Kane scored his sixth goal 1:46 into the contest, when he beat Rangers netminder Jonathan Quick after defenceman Matthew Robertson’s path was briefly blocked by a linesman.

Ohgren, acquired Friday from Minnesota in the Quinn Hughes trade, made it 2-0 at 3:24 of the second. It was Ohgren’s first goal with Vancouver. The 21-year-old Swedish forward also played 18 games without a point for the Wild this season.
