Russian figure skater Adeliia Petrosian is an Olympic mystery with big jumps and fitness concerns

James Ellingworth, The Associated Press 4 minute read 6:30 AM CST

MILAN (AP) — Few figure skaters at the Winter Olympics have seen Adeliia Petrosian compete in real life.

She might leave with the gold medal.

Russia's exclusion from international sports events during its war with Ukraine means that the 18-year-old Petrosian has only skated one senior competition outside of her homeland, the qualifier that earned her place as a neutral athlete in Milan.

As she readies to skate to Michael Jackson's music in the short program Tuesday, no one besides Petrosian and her controversial coach, Eteri Tutberidze, can be sure of her form, or whether she's injury-free.

Canada’s Rachel Homan vents after rock pulled in first end for ‘double touching’

Gregory Strong, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 4:47 PM CST

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO - Canadian women's curling skip Rachel Homan sounded off Saturday after she had a rock pulled in an 8-7 loss to Switzerland, claiming she was unfairly punished for a 'double-touching' controversy involving Canada and Sweden in the men's draw.

Homan's first rock of the game was pulled by the umpire, who ruled she touched the granite after releasing the handle. The draw didn't touch any other stones and it was removed when it came to rest.

Clearly frustrated after losing in an extra end, Homan was asked by reporters if she felt she was being unfairly treated.

"100 per cent," Homan said. "Without a doubt."

MILAN - Mikael Kingsbury reminded the world why he's the most decorated freestyle skier in history on Sunday as he won a gold medal for Canada in the men's dual moguls event at the Milan Cortina Games.

It was a day of yet more firsts in a career full of them: Canada's first gold medal of the Games, and the first-ever gold medal in men's dual moguls, which made its Olympic debut.

It was also a day of lasts for 33-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Que., who confirmed he was skiing in his final Games.

"I gave everything, I had no regrets. I didn't feel too nervous. I trusted my plan, I trusted the work that I put in with my team and just went for it. I'm really happy with the outcome," he said.

LIVIGNO - Canada's bid to return to the podium in mixed team snowboard cross ended quickly Sunday at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Éliot Grondin and Audrey McManiman failed to advance after placing fourth in their quarterfinal. Britain 1 and Australia 2 finished 1-2 to move on to the semifinals with Austria 1 in third.

Grondin and Meryeta O’Dine teamed up to win bronze in the first Olympic mixed team snowboard cross event four years ago in Beijing.

Britain 1, featuring Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale, won gold this time round, overtaking France 2. Italy 1 took silver with the French settling for bronze.

Mistelbacher’s shootout goal stands as winner

The Brandon Wheat Kings earned their third 4-3 consecutive victory on Saturday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit to beat the rebuilding Swift Current Broncos in a shootout in Western Hockey League action at InnovationPlex.

Brandon (31-22-1-0) received its goals from Grayson Burzynski, Jaxon Jacobson and Cameron Allard, with Trae Johnson, Trae Wilke and Carter Moen replying for Swift Current (13-35-3-2) in front of a crowd of 2,311.

Earlier in the day, the team released a statement that forward Joby Baumuller, who was stretchered off the ice and taken to hospital by ambulance on Friday during a 4-3 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders, was resting at his billet house after undergoing comprehensive testing.

Brandon head coach and general manager Marty Murray said his injury-riddled club, which made the six-hour trip to Swift Current earlier in the day, earned a gutsy two points after falling behind 3-1. They dressed six defencemen and 11 forwards as 16-year-old callup Carson Park made his WHL debut.

LIVIGNO - Like the old Timex watch ad, snowboarders take a licking and keep on ticking.

Take Regina's Mark McMorris, whose crash in big air training Feb. 4 at the Milan Cortina Olympics left him with a concussion, pelvic bone bruising and strained abdominal muscles.

"But thankfully, nothing that nine days couldn't fix," he said cheerfully in a media availability Friday at Livigno Snow Park. "I'm feeling pretty darn good again. Slowly building my confidence again and having fun."

McMorris was taken away on a stretcher and checked out in hospital before returning later that night to the Canadian team accommodations.

Gold eludes Canada in first half of Milan Cortina Winter Olympics

MILAN - Halftime arrived, and Canada still had no gold medals at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

No gold by the end of Day 8 on Saturday marked the deepest a Canadian team had gone at a Winter Olympics without reaching the top of the podium since 1988 in Calgary, when the host nation was shut out.

"We would have preferred to see Canada win gold by now, so it's not exactly where we want to be just in terms of the medal standings, but at the same time, no one's panicking," Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive officer David Shoemaker said Saturday.

"There's a high degree of confidence among this Olympic team. We'll see our gold medals, they'll come, and our team's poised and ready."

MILAN - From frustration to redemption, here are five things to know from Saturday, Feb. 14, at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games:

---

SPRINTING FOR THE PODIUM

Laurent Dubreuil is one of Canada's most decorated speedskating sprinters. But at the 2022 Beijing Games, he missed the podium in the men's 500 metres by three-hundredths of a second. He earned redemption in Milan, skating to bronze in an extremely fast race. Dubreuil, from Levis, Que., took the early lead with an Olympic record time of 34.26 seconds. Three pairings later, eventual gold-medallist Jordan Stolz of the United States and silver-medallist Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands bested Dubreuil's briefly held Olympic record. But while Dubreuil was bumped down to third, his fast time held up through the final two pairings.

The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:41 PM CST

MILAN - Canadian short-track star William Dandjinou arrived at the Milan Cortina Olympics as the world’s top-ranked skater and a favourite for multiple gold medals.

Two events into his individual program, he is still searching for a podium finish.

The 24-year-old Montreal native finished fifth Saturday in a chaotic men’s 1,500-metre final marked by heavy contact and constant position changes.

The Netherlands’ Jens van ’t Wout won gold after also triumphing in the 1,000 two days earlier. South Korea’s Hwang Daeheon took silver, while Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs completed the podium.
