The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned relief pitcher Brendon Little to triple-A Buffalo among a number of moves made.

Little has struggled to start the season, giving up 10 earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings along with three walks and 10 hits.

The 29-year-old has an 0-2 record across five games.

Senators respond to coach’s challenge with huge win over Hurricanes

Lisa Wallace, The Canadian Press 4 minute read 4:00 AM CDT

OTTAWA - Travis Green challenged his players to step up and he got the desired response.

After falling 4-1 to the Minnesota Wild Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa Senators head coach was less than pleased with the effort from some of his players.

Sunday, his entire team responded and was rewarded with a 6-3 victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes.

Ottawa (40-27-10) is in a battle with the Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals for the final wild-card berth the Eastern Conference. Sunday’s victory allowed them to remain in the final spot but with just five games remaining Ottawa will need to find a way to match that effort and desperation down the stretch.

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens fell 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night, ending an eight-game winning streak just hours after clinching a second straight trip to the playoffs.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 18 shots for his first shutout of the season, while Cody Glass and Timo Meier scored for New Jersey (40-24-3), which is fighting to keep its slim post-season chances alive. Connor Brown added an empty-net goal and Jack Hughes provided two assists.

Jacob Fowler made 17 saves for Montreal (45-22-10) after the Canadiens capped an undefeated five-game road trip with a 4-3 shootout win over the Devils on Saturday.

Cole Caufield remained one goal short of his 50th for the second straight game after scoring his 48th and 49th on Thursday against the New York Rangers.

Lauren Coughlin wins Aramco Championship by five shots at Shadow Creek

Mark Anderson, The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 8:25 PM CDT

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — After coming oh so close to winning at Shadow Creek last year, Lauren Coughlin made sure victory was never truly in doubt Sunday in the Aramco Championship in rolling to a five-shot win over Nelly Korda and the rest of the star-studded field.

Coughlin shot an even-par 72 for a 7-under total and her first victory in two years, earning the 33-year-old from Virginia US$600,000. She won her third LPGA Tour title and first in the United States, after winning in Canada and Scotland in 2024.

Korda was runner-up yet again after shooting a 75 and finishing at 2 under. She made her one birdie on the par-5 18th, avoiding going without one in a round for the first time since the first day of The ANNIKA last November in the Tampa Bay area.

This was her third consecutive second-place finish after opening her season by winning in Orlando, Florida, moving Korda up a spot to No. 1 in the world ranking.

NHL roundup: Flyers top Bruins 2-1 in OT, inch closer to playoff return

The Associated Press 7 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:55 PM CDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Porter Martone capped a fantastic first week in the NHL with a power-play goal to put the Philadelphia Flyers even closer toward ending a miserable playoff drought with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Martone — who just wrapped his season at Michigan State — is just the boost the Flyers needed down the stretch to earn that coveted playoff spot. His first career NHL goal in his fourth game put the Flyers into third place in the Metropolitan Division with five regular-season games left for them.

Flyers fans erupted when Martone capitalized on the man advantage — courtesy of David Pastrnak’s hooking penalty — with 2:29 left in OT.

The Flyers needed this win to get in Eastern Conference playoff position for the first time since Jan. 12.

Tkachuk scores twice, Senators help playoff chances by beating Hurricanes 6-3

OTTAWA - Captain Brady Tkachuk had Ottawa fans chanting "we want playoffs" after scoring his second goal of the game en route to a Senators' 6-3 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes Sunday.

The victory lifts the Senators (40-27-10) into the final wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference with five games left to play.

A win would have allowed Carolina (49-22-6) to clinch the Metropolitan Division.

Both teams were playing the back half of back-to-back games but the Senators seemed to find another gear in the third period.

J.J. Spaun rallies to win Texas Open for first title since U.S. Open

The Associated Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:51 PM CDT

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — J.J. Spaun came up with two big shots at the end of a long, wet Sunday, one leading to birdie and the other for eagle that carried him to a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory in the Valero Texas Open for his first title since the U.S. Open last summer.

Spaun won for the second time at the TPC San Antonio, with one big difference. His victory four years ago got him into the Masters. Now he is the U.S. Open champion who already had his spot at Augusta National secured. But this was an important win.

He had yet to finish in the top 20 in seven starts this year — his best was a tie for 24th in The Players Championship — and now the 35-year-old Californian has a validating win in tough conditions as he heads into the first major of the year.

“It’s just — this game is so crazy,” Spaun said. “I haven’t been feeling at the form I wanted to be based on last season, and just trying to take each day as it comes, and accepting what I have."

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ryan Strome scored his 500th career point with a goal against his former team, Morgan Frost had two goals, and the Calgary Flames sent the Anaheim Ducks to their fifth consecutive loss with a 5-3 victory Saturday night.

Joel Farabee and Matvei Gridin had a goal and an assist apiece for the Flames, who extended the Ducks' late-season spiral by earning their first win over Anaheim in four meetings this season. Devin Cooley made 36 saves.

Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish scored in the third period, but the Ducks' comeback from a 4-1 deficit fell short when Frost put his second goal into an empty net with 1:11 to play.

Beckett Sennecke also scored and Ville Husso stopped 15 shots during yet another rough defensive performance by the Ducks.

EDMONTON - Jack Eichel had three assists as the Vegas Golden Knights continued their strong play under new head coach John Tortorella, coming away with a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Brett Howden and Jeremy Lauzon each had a goal and an assist, while Colton Sissons, Mark Stone and Rasmus Andersson also scored for the Golden Knights (35-26-16) who have won all three games since Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy on the bench and are 3-0-2 in their last five contests.

Vegas moved one point back of both Edmonton and Anaheim atop the Pacific Division standings.

Evan Bouchard replied for the Oilers (39-29-9) who had their season-high five-game win streak halted. Edmonton played without star forwards Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman.
