CF Montreal tops Calgary Blizzard SC 5-0 to advance to Canadian Championship quarters

Elias Grigoriadis, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Wednesday, May. 6, 2026

MONTREAL - CF Montreal booked their ticket to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Championship with a 5-0 rout of Alberta Premier League side Calgary Blizzard SC at Stade Saputo on Wednesday evening.

Ivan Losenko, Daniel Rios, Wiki Carmona, Ivan Jaime and Frankie Amaya all scored for Montreal in their third consecutive home win.

“The second half was satisfactory, but the first really wasn’t; we were missing way too many of the concepts we’re currently working on. We controlled the game, but that was to be expected (…) these are trap games, and we did well not to fall into one,” said head coach Philippe Eullaffroy.

“This is a trophy that the club loves very much; we’ve won it five times. There is a strong history between this club and the competition, and it’s one the fans care about deeply.”

B.C. minister says local group plans to bid for Vancouver Whitecaps

Wolfgang Depner and Gemma Karstens-Smith, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Wednesday, May. 6, 2026

British Columbia Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon says the provincial government has been approached by a local group that wants to buy the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The potential B.C.-based bid for the Major League Soccer team comes after the announcement of a formal offer by a U.S. group to buy and relocate the team to Las Vegas last week.

"We just had a group that's reached out to us that has been organizing apparently for a few weeks to put a bid in for the Whitecaps," Kahlon told reporters in Victoria on Wednesday.

He said the group was doing "due diligence" and he understood that it would share more information soon about a bid that is "grounded in a plan" to keep the team in Vancouver.

Road closures, drones, and new stadium rules for World Cup in Vancouver

Nono Shen, The Canadian Press 2 minute read Wednesday, May. 6, 2026

VANCOUVER - Organizers of the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver have unveiled details of preparations that include the closure of a major downtown road artery for more than two months.

Taunya Geelhoed, chief operations officer for the host committee, says a stretch of Pacific Blvd. close to BC Place stadium will be closed from May 23 to late July, with a map showing the closure stretching from the Cambie Street Bridge to Carrall St.

That's in addition to numerous other closures and traffic restrictions around the stadium on the seven match days in Vancouver, from June 13 to July 7.

Vancouver Police Deputy Chief Don Chapman says residents can expect additional CCTV cameras around the stadium and security perimeter, while drones will be deployed to monitor crowd movements when necessary.

MUNICH (AP) — Ousmane Dembélé scored early and Paris Saint-Germain eliminated Bayern Munich with a 1-1 draw to reach the Champions League final again on Wednesday.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia raced clear after playing a simple one-two with Fabián Ruiz in midfield, then picked out the unmarked Dembélé to sweep the ball in under the crossbar in the third minute of the semifinal second leg.

By the time Harry Kane equalized in stoppage time it was too late for Bayern.

The draw gave PSG, the defending champion, a 6-5 win on aggregate after edging their encounter 5-4 in the first leg in Paris last week.

CPL champion Atletico Ottawa upsets Toronto FC 3-1 in Canadian Championship

Kaitlyn McGrath, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

TORONTO - Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser said his Major League Soccer team should feel "embarrassed" after surrendering three unanswered goals in the second half to lose 3-1 to visiting Atlético Ottawa on Tuesday in the 2026 Telus Canadian Championship preliminary round.

“(I) felt like we weren't assertive enough in the moments we needed to be, and then I thought the goals we gave up were tragic,” said a visibly frustrated Fraser.

Ottawa, the reigning Canadian Premier League champions, will now face the winner between FC Supra du Quebec (CPL) and Woodbridge Strikers (League1 Ontario) in the quarterfinal stage, a two-leg home-and-away series. Those matches are scheduled for July.

The Telus Canadian Championship is the nation’s top domestic tournament, featuring 15 clubs — including three clubs from MLS, eight from the CPL and four from Premier Soccer Leagues Canada — competing for the Voyageurs Cup. The winner qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the elite club competition in the region.

Arsenal reaches first Champions League final in 20 years after Saka’s goal secures win over Atletico

Mattias Karen, The Associated Press 2 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal is back in the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years thanks to a late first-half goal from Bukayo Saka that secured a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Saka was on hand to slot in the rebound after Leandro Trossard’s shot was saved by Jan Oblak in the 45th minute to put Arsenal up 2-1 on aggregate in the second leg of their semifinal.

The Gunners’ stingy defense did the rest as Arsenal has now kept a clean sheet at home in all three knockout rounds. The team also conceded a competition-low four goals in winning all eight of its matches in the league phase.

It will be only Arsenal’s second final in Europe’s premier competition, having lost the 2006 title match to Barcelona. This time it will face either defending champion Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30. PSG won the pulsating first leg of their semifinal 5-4, and the second leg is in Munich on Wednesday.

The Associated Press 3 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

MILAN (AP) — Inter Milan sealed the Italian league soccer title with a 2-0 victory over visiting Parma on Sunday.

Inter, which needed only a draw to secure the trophy, moved an unassailable 12 points clear of 2025 champion Napoli with three rounds remaining.

It’s Inter’s 21st Serie A title, trailing only the record 36 held by Juventus.

Marcus Thuram scored just before the break with an angled shot placed just beyond the reach of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Then 37-year-old Henrikh Mkhitaryan added another in the 80th after taking a pass from Serie A scoring leader Lautaro Martinez, who came off the bench to mark his return from an injury layoff.

Laborda scores goal in 82nd minute as Whitecaps tie Galaxy 1-1

The Associated Press 2 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Mathias Laborda scored in the 82nd minute for the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in a 1-1 tie with the L.A. Galaxy.

The Whitecaps (8-1-1), who were only the second Major League Soccer side in the post-shootout era (since 2000) to win eight of their first nine games to begin a season, had their club regular-season record four-game win streak halted.

Sebastian Berhalter played a free kick from the left side to the back post and Laborda headed home the finish from point-blank range to cap the scoring.

The Whitecaps had 58 per cent ball possession and outshot L.A. 19-7, including 5-2 on target.

ATLANTA (AP) — Saba Lobjanidze scored a goal in each half and Atlanta United rallied to beat CF Montreal 3-1 on Saturday night.

Matty Longstaff took a pass from Prince Owusu and scored in the sixth minute to put Montreal (3-7-0) on top early. It was Longstaff's second goal of the Major League Soccer season and his fourth in 67 career appearances. Owusu collected his fourth assist, one off his career high set last season.

Toronto FC plays to 1-1 draw against MLS-leading San Jose Earthquakes

Steve Buffery, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

TORONTO - The BMO Field stands were rocking on Saturday afternoon, especially during an achingly close chance for Toronto FC to pull out the win.

Attacking midfielder Daniel Salloi chipped the ball towards the open goal from the right half-space outside the box in the 86th minute. But just as the ball appeared to be crossing the goal line, San Jose Earthquakes defender Reid Roberts booted it out of harm’s way — denying the Reds the go-ahead goal.

In the end, TFC managed to wrestle a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Major League Soccer-leading Earthquakes.

“I haven’t looked yet,” TFC coach Robin Fraser said of the play. “The coaches were like, ‘Hey, do you want to see it?’ And I’m like, ‘no’, because I don’t want to lose my crap over it. So, I haven’t looked.”

Nerazzurri on brink of 21st Scudetto… not that anyone’s talking about it

Jerrad Peters 5 minute read Friday, May. 1, 2026

Inter Milan will likely win its 21st Scudetto on Sunday. And if not Sunday, then next Saturday. And if not then…well, it will have.

Should Napoli and AC Milan lose to Como and Sassuolo, respectively, it would even be champions before kicking off against Parma at San Siro (1:45 p.m., FuboTV).

Typically, an imminent title would be the main talking point — and by some distance — in the days before that title is won. It would also be expected that this Inter group would get its flowers, what with the next few weeks being a sort of last hurrah.

Goalkeepers Yann Sommer and Raffaele Di Gennaro, defenders Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard (who has spent this season on loan to Marseille), wing-back Matteo Darmian and playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan are all out of contract in June. Federico Dimarco and Hakan Çalhanoglu have another year remaining on theirs, but the latter will almost certainly depart at that point, if not before.

OTTAWA - Canada Soccer's plan to build a national training centre has received a major funding boost.

The federal government announced Friday it will contribute $9.8 million from the new Build Communities Strong Fund for the planning, design and pre-construction of the proposed facility.

“The national training centre will be a multi-use, nationally significant sport and community infrastructure project, and will establish a permanent home for soccer in Canada," housing and infrastructure minister Gregor Robertson said at the announcement in Vancouver.

"The national training centre is envisioned as an integrated sport and community campus. Plans feature outdoor fields, a full-sized indoor pitch for year-round use, and high-performance training and sports science facilities.”

FIFA leader Infantino starts race for re-election in 2027 vote hosted by African ally Morocco

Anne M. Peterson And Graham Dunbar, The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The FIFA presidential vote in 2027 that is set to give Gianni Infantino a final four-year term in office will be hosted by Morocco — the soccer body’s second straight election meeting in Africa where he has built strong political ties.

Infantino on Thursday announced the 2030 World Cup co-host will stage a March 18 election meeting of FIFA’s 211 member federations who currently figure to re-elect him unopposed for a third time since his first win in a five-candidate contest in 2016.

“I am honored and humbled at the same time," Infantino told global soccer leaders before confirming his inevitable candidacy for the election.

FIFA's financial security, with multi-billion dollar reserves boosted by a high-revenue 2026 World Cup in North America, allows paying at least $8 million during this presidential term to each voting member federation.
