Canada into mixed doubles curling semifinals with wins over Czechia, Switzerland

The Canadian Press 3 minute read Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026

GENEVA - Canada earned a direct spot into the world mixed doubles curling championship semifinals after finishing the preliminary round with a pair of wins on Thursday.

Kadriana and Colton Lott followed a nervy 6-5 extra-end win over Czechia in the day's early draw to a more comfortable 10-5 win over Switzerland in the evening.

The wins ensured the husband-and-wife duo from Gimli, Man., would finish atop the Group B standings at 8-1. The top teams from each group advance directly to Friday’s semifinals, while the second- and third-place teams meet in a qualifying round.

"Couldn't be more proud. I think it makes it better that we're teammates, we're a couple, we're partners," Kadriana Lott said of teaming up with her husband. "It's great to do what we do and to travel and play on this surface together. It’s a huge feeling."

Curling Canada to look at timing of national championships in Olympic seasons

Donna Spencer, Gregory Strong, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026

With a new quadrennial set to begin, one of many things on Curling Canada's to-do list is tackling a glaring inequality with its Olympic teams in 2026.

Rachel Homan's team was unable to defend its Scotties Tournament of Hearts title in Mississauga, Ont., last season and also missed out on a chance to go for back-to-back world titles. The Jan. 23-Feb. 1 Canadian playdowns were tight against the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Women's round-robin play started Feb. 12 at the Games. The national women's championship is traditionally played in mid-February.

Curling Canada required Homan, the Trials winner, to be in Italy for a training camp ahead of Olympic competition. Her team went on to win a bronze medal in Cortina.

Key steal of three leads Canada over Germany 7-4 at mixed doubles worlds

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 29, 2026

GENEVA - A steal of three points in the third end led Canada’s Kadriana and Colton Lott to a 7-4 win over Germany on Wednesday at the world mixed doubles curling championship.

Germany's Kim Sutor and Sixten Totzek opened with the hammer and scored two in the first end.

After the Lotts managed just one point in the second, the husband-and-wife duo from Gimli, Man., broke the game open in the third when they drew for three behind cover, and the Germans missed on their final shot.

"That definitely gave us control of the game," Colton Lott said. "Once we had the lead, we never let go. It was a great way to start strong."
