SASKATOON — Brandonite Rob Fowler and Team Manitoba are on a roll at the Tim Hortons Brier in Saskatoon.

The Fowler foursome, which includes third Allan Lyburn, second Richard Daneault and lead Derek Samagalski, are on a three-game winning streak after beating Prince Edward Island’s Mike Gaudet 8-3 Sunday evening.

At 3-1, Manitoba is tied for second place with Nova Scotia’s Jamie Murphy. They only trail Alberta’s Kevin Koe (3-0), whose team features former Brandonite Nolan Thiessen at lead. Saskatchewan, Ontario, Northern Ontario and the Territories are right behind at 2-1.

The opening weekend was a grind for Manitoba, playing four games in the first five draws. They dropped their opener 7-6 to Quebec’s Robert Desjardins Saturday afternoon before beating New Brunswick’s Terry Odishaw 6-3 that evening. They took advantage of a missed takeout by Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue in the 10th end to beat them 8-7 Sunday morning.

Fowler is looking forward to an easier day Monday, but thinks the schedule may work in his team’s favour.

“As much as it maybe would have been nice to play one game the first day and break in a little bit easier, the fact we got to 3-1 and you get a mid-week day with only one game I think will help us moving forward,” he said.

The team is planning to relax tonight before getting prepared to play British Columbia’s Jim Cotter at 12:30 p.m., a game which they will enter with a lot of confidence.

“It’s a good situation, 3-1,” Daneault said. “Our destiny is in our own hands and we just have to keep winning.”
