The pesticide debate is heating up again in Manitoba with the anti-ban side mailing postcards to thousands of Manitoba residents this week.
The postcards call on homeowners to let Premier Greg Selinger know they oppose a ban on pesticides.
David Hinton of Landscape Manitoba said, in a news release, homeowners who oppose a ban need only to sign the card and drop it in the mail.
Landscape Manitoba is a trade association of landscapers, growers and others in the horticultural industry who support responsible pesticide use.
Provincial staff are studying the pesticide issue with an eye to phasing in a ban over one or two years, possibly beginning next year.
Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh has said the province is simply following the lead of other provinces that have banned cosmetic use of pesticides. Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador have each brought in restrictions on lawn chemicals in the last decade.
The anti-ban supporters are not the only group that has lobbied the government. Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Manitoba, a coalition of health and environmental groups has pushed for a ban of cosmetic pesticide use.
