The Manitoba Press Council has called it quits.

The council was founded over a quarter-century ago by the publishers of the Winnipeg Free Press, the Brandon Sun, the Portage Daily Graphic and the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association. It ceased operations on Jan. 1, 2012, after its members decided to stop funding it.

Structured as an arms-length board with representation from both inside and outside the industry, the press council adjudicated complaints from the public.

In its closing email, the press council’s board of directors said that there had been discussion about forming a national-level organization.
