Manitoba’s ombudsman, Irene Hamilton, has resigned after almost seven years in the position.

The province announced Wednesday that Hamilton will join the Justice Department in the newly created post of director of justice innovation.

The new government branch she heads will lead efforts to streamline processes within the justice system while ensuring it remains fair and effective, Justice Minister Andrew Swan said in a press release.

Before her appointment as ombudsman, Hamilton served as an assistant deputy minister in the Justice Department.

“Ms. Hamilton has served Manitobans very well in her independent role as ombudsman,” Swan said. “I’m confident she will bring experience and a fresh perspective to her new role that will help improve the justice system.”

Swan announced that Mel Holley has been appointed as the acting provincial ombudsman. Holley is currently manager of investigations for the ombudsman’s office. An all-party committee of the Manitoba legislative assembly will recommend a new permanent ombudsman, Swan said.
