A dramatic scene came to a peaceful resolution after police closed in on a Brandon home Saturday evening.
At approximately 5:40 p.m., Brandon police were called to the 800 block of Ninth Street following reports of gunfire in the area.
Staff Sgt. Larry Yanick said the initial investigation points to an altercation on the street between two groups of people.
“Someone reported hearing a gun go off and some remarks being made a person in one of the groups about having a gun,” Yanick said.
Following a fight and argument, one of the groups — two women and a man — returned to a residence in the area. Yanick said police closed in on the home and approximately one hour after the initial call the trio exited the home peacefully.
“They were taken into custody without incident,” Yanick said. “One of the females had a small injury from what we believe are pellets from a shotgun. She has a small mark on the side of her head and we believe she was grazed by some pellets.”
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was a traumatic scene that unfolded in front of him prior to police arriving.
“I heard screaming,” he said. “It was scary and one of the women was saying ‘That’s what happens when you don’t pay up.’”
During the altercation, one of the men pulled out a sawed-off shotgun and waved it around before putting it against a woman’s head, according to the witness. The woman pushed the gun away before being shoved the ground. The second group — two men and one woman — took off running while the man with the gun retreated to the residence with two women.
Shortly after the two men returned and kicked the door at the home, when a shot rang out, according to the witness.
Police are still looking for the second group of people who left the scene. Yanick described the three people who were arrested as being in their mid- to late-20s, while the second group is unknown, the witness described them as younger, possibly in their late teens.
There have been no charges yet as police continue to investigate.
Yanick said a weapon hasn’t been recovered as of late Saturday night.
