The Sturgeon Tire fire — Brandon’s biggest blaze in several years — may have been sparked by an aging air compressor.
An investigator with the Brandon fire department says that it looks like a bearing inside an electric motor was the root cause of the fire. The bearing failed — either due to age or hours of service, the investigator said — and caused nearby wires to overheat. That led to an electrical fire. The fire is believed to have first broken out in a service room.
Two businesses in the building, at First Street and Pacific Avenue, were completely destroyed by the Monday night fire, which burned for several hours. What little was left of the building was demolished yesterday.
