Brandon’s Rob Fowler rolled off five straight wins to claim the Safeway Championship in Dauphin Sunday afternoon.

Fowler and his team of Allan Lyburn, Richard Daneault and Derek Samagalski stole two points in the 10th end to beat former Brandonite Mike McEwen 10-6 in the provincial men’s curling championship final.

The Fowler team weathered a storm early in the game and became grounded when Fowler made a double-raise takeout for one in the second end. They stole one in the third and two in the fourth when McEwen’s last rock wrecked on a guard. The teams exchanged deuces after that until the 10th end.

Fowler, who is the first Westman-based team to win the Safeway Select since Deloraine’s Duane Edwards won the event in 1990, beat defending world champion Jeff Stoughton and fourth-seed William Lyburn along the way to the championship. This is the third straight year McEwen, who leads the World Curling Tour in money and points, has lost the final.

Fowler is the first Brandon skip to win the provincial men’s title since his father, Brian, accomplished the feat in 1987. His team advances to the Brier Canadian men’s championship in Saskatoon.
