For at least one weekend Brandon is the king of Kings.

Tim McGauley’s second goal of the game, 1:46 into overtime, lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday night at Westman Place. It was Brandon’s second home-ice victory in as many days over the defending Western Hockey League champions.

"To get these two wins was huge for our team, a huge confidence booster," said McGauley, who also had an assist on Saturday, giving him six points (three goals, three assists) in the weekend series. "They’re a great club over there and to beat these guys was a huge accomplishment for us."

The Wheat Kings came from behind on both nights, rallying from one goal down in the second period in Friday’s 7-4 victory, then topping that on Saturday by overcoming a two-goal deficit on third-period tallies by Jayce Hawryluk and Jesse Gabrielle. Gabrielle and rookie Nolan Patrick each had a goal and an assist as the Wheat Kings (19-5-1-0) stretched their lead to five points in the Eastern Conference.

"It was really good to get a four-point weekend and to not give up when we got down two goals going into the third there," Patrick said. "We kept battling back and it was good to get the win there."

Lane Bauer had a two goals and an assist for the Oil Kings (12-9-2-2), who got their other markers from Mads Eller and Cole Benson.

After Brandon played a strong first period to go into the intermission with a 2-1 lead, Edmonton took control in the second with three goals. Gabrielle converted a nifty feed from Eric Roy only 1:36 into third, then with 4:42 left in regulation, Hawryluk backhanded home a loose puck to match Gabrielle with a team-high 13 goals this season.

The Wheat Kings had to weather one more storm to get to OT as they killed a John Quenneville tripping minor that came with 3:10 to go in the third period, capping a 4-for-4 night for Brandon’s penalty killers.

"After we’d worked hard to come back and tie it, it would have been pretty disappointing to not get that kill," Wheat Kings head coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon said. "So credit to those (penalty killers) for keeping us in the game late."

McGauley scored on the only shot of overtime, collecting Ivan Provorov’s cross-ice feed and wiring a high wrist shot past Edmonton goalie Patrick Dea.

Dea finished with 36 saves, while Brandon netminder Jordan Papirny did his best work in the third period, making 14 of his 28 stops.

ONE-TIMERS: Attendance was 3,592 … The Wheat Kings were 0-for-2 on the power play … Brandon scratched D Kale Clague (upper body, week-to-week), LW Ty Lewis (arm, week-to-week), LW Braylon Shmyr and D Mark Taraschuk … The Wheat Kings will wrap up a three-game homestand by hosting the Saskatoon Blades on Tuesday.
