WINNIPEG — RCMP have laid fraud charges against a Winnipeg man accused of ripping off people on the online auction site eBay.

Investigators believe the 41-year-old man offered antique items or replicas of antiques for sale on eBay but didn’t provide the items after he was paid.

The RCMP commercial crimes unit received numerous complains from victims, all from  outside Canada. The value of goods is estimated at just over $39,000 (US).

After a 16-month investigation, Carleton Bruce Ross was arrested and charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 and five counts of fraud under $5,000. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 9th in Winnipeg.

Police remind the public to be diligent when dealing with people and/or companies over the Internet. Inquiries with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau and PhoneBusters may provide valuable information before making purchases online.
