Pallister becomes new Manitoba PC party leader

The new leader of Manitoba's Progressive Conservatives will hold his first press conference this morning.

Brian Pallister was acclaimed the party leader after leadership nominations closed Saturday with no challenger. He takes over from Hugh McFadyen, who stepped down after the party lost the last provincial election and failed to win any additional seats. McFadyen's official resignation takes effect today before Pallister's first news conference as leader, the party said in a press release.

"I am humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to lead the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba," Pallister said in a prepared statement.

"I want to thank all of the volunteers and supporters who helped this campaign conclude successfully. I am excited by the prospects for our party and our province and am ready for the challenge." The former cabinet minister in Gary Filmon's government and Canadian Alliance and Conservative member of Parliament is 58.

The financial adviser, who lived much of his life near Portage la Prairie, where he owns his own business, recently moved to Charleswood. He will likely run in Fort Whyte, McFadyen's seat, when a byelection is called.
