The Brandon School Divison welcomed a new superintendent of schools to the city during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Marc Casavant will be moving to the Wheat City from Weyburn, Sask., to take on the role currently held by superintendent and CEO Donna Michaels, who is retiring after 15 years in the position.

Casavant holds a PhD in educational administration and has been involved in Saskatchewan’s education system since 1995.

“There’s a really good fit between what Dr. Casavant brought as his qualifications, but also his past experiences and how those linked to what we have operating in the school division today,” board of trustees chair Mark Sefton said following the conference.

The new superintendent was selected by the board from more than a dozen applicants.

Sefton cited Casavant’s previous development of indigenous education programs, his utilization of division data and his knowledge of the Response to Intervention Model — a tiered student services model in place in the BSD — as some of the reasons he was offered the job.

During his tenure in Saskatchewan, Casavant worked as a teacher and principal before moving into a number of senior leadership roles.

Most recently, he was director of education and CEO for Weyburn’s South East Cornerstone Public School Division, which has enrolment numbers and an operating budget similar to BSD’s.

“That was very attractive to the board,” Sefton said.

Casavant will be moving to Brandon with his wife and three children ahead of his July 1 start date.

“I think the first six months I’m going to spend listening to people and building relationships,” Casavant said of his top priorities. “The team that I’m going to surround myself with, I’ve got to spend some time with them and understand the roles they’re serving in the school district and really get to understand how we’re operating in the schools with our strategic plan.”

Board members will be taking Casavant on a tour of five Brandon schools today and he will be returning to check out more schools sometime in April.

“As you can imagine, with 22 schools, it’s not something you do in a part of an afternoon,” Sefton said.
