The Neelin Spartans boys and Vincent Massey girls claimed Brandon High School Basketball League junior varsity titles at Neelin on Thursday.
The Spartan boys took Game 2 of the best-of-three boys’ final against the Vikings 94-41, sweeping the series. Dayton Black led the Spartans with 29 points, while teammates Riley Paul and Jacob Thomson poured in had 23 and 11 points, respectively. Nico Hernando led the Vikings with 12 points.
The Vikings girls closed out their best-of-three series with a 34-22 triumph over the Spartans in Game 2 to complete their sweep.
Alex Sian had 12 points, while McKenna Penner chipped in with 10 points for Massey. Kasadie Giilck led Neelin with eight points.
The Neelin JV girls will travel to MacGregor to play a AAA interzone game against the Stonewall Rams on March 2, while the Neelin JV boys will host the Virden Golden Bears in their AAA interzone game on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Massey JV boys’ and girls’ teams will host the Garden Valley Zodiacs in AAAA interzone games on March 3.
In freshmen boys’ semifinal action, Neelin and Massey both won, advancing to the city final. The Spartans, led by 15 points from Damien Bursey, 12 points from Cauy Farthing and 10 points from Hayden Johnson, beat Crocus Plains Gold 55-16. Joseph Brown had seven points for Crocus Gold. In the other game, Massey defeated Crocus Plains Maroon 66-24.
Massey will host the freshmen boys’ city final on Wednesday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
