TEAM Manitoba returned last Sunday from the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in St. Albert, Alta. with 36 medals.

Manitoba’s team, dubbed Team Toba, included 42 athletes who competed among about 1,000 athletes from across Canada in the multi-sport winter games which began on Feb. 28 and concluded last Saturday. The athletes were accompanied by 22 volunteer coaches and mission staff.

Manitoba won six medals in the final snowshoe competitions last Saturday including gold medals by Sara Holmes in the female 200-metre race and Barret Wallis in the male 200m race and one bronze in the male 200m by David Cheyne.

In total, Team Toba earned 16 gold medals, nine silver and 11 bronze medals.

Manitoba’s teams won silver in floor hockey and gold in curling.

The Manitoba athletes competed in seven sports, including alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speed skating.

The 2012 National Games were also the qualifying event for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Team Canada selections will be announced in the spring.
