Theatre lovers and amateur historians alike will be delighted by Daly House’s upcoming production of Stephen Leacock’s “Behind the Beyond.”

Showtime at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at the Brandon University School of Music is 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Stephen Leacock was considered the best humourist in the English-speaking world from 1900 to about 1925. He literally and literarally put Canada on the map with his satirical short stories about life in a small Ontario town. His stories are still studied in many CanLit programs.

“Behind the Beyond” is one of the best known and has been adapted for stage performance. Set in London and Paris, it pokes fun at both theatre and audiences of the early 20th century.

Daly House is working with local actors including Peter Buehler, George Buri, Christine Penner, Andrew Mok, and Julia Redfern.

“The actors have a true appreciation for the satire in the play,” director Trish Buri says. “We’ve had a lot of laughs during rehearsals. I think it’s great to keep Leacock’s work alive, and the play fits the Daly House mandate to preserve the culture and traditions of the time period.”

At the conclusion of the performance, there will be a talkback followed by complimentary refreshments.

Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for adults and may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the Daly House Museum at 727-1722. All proceeds go to the Daly House Museum.
