Friends are remembering two Brandon men who died in an ATV crash on Saturday as the type of people who would go out of their way to help others.

Ron Ladouceur, 59, and Al Chalifoux, 51, died after the RZR side-by-side Ladouceur was driving hit an approach approximately eight kilometres south of Shilo.

Ladouceur spent more than 15 years working at Precision Toyota and owner Scott Ball said the news is hitting the dealership hard.

“Ron was a super happy guy,” Ball said on Sunday, reflecting on the time he had spent with Ladouceur.

“He was liked by everyone in our store and everyone is really sad. He was a great guy.”

Ladouceur was set to turn 60 this week.

“We were planning a surprise birthday party for him because he doesn’t have a lot of family around here,” Ball said.

Friends sent messages on Ladouceur’s Facebook wall after learning of the devastating news.

“Hard to believe your gone, I was looking forward to this winter up at the cabin sledding,” said one post. “You have been one hell of a guy to be around and hang out with, gonna miss all the fun times spent with you and many beers enjoyed. You and Al rest easy.”

Ladouceur and Chalifoux, who was recently hired at Precision Toyota, were at Ball’s family farm for the weekend. The pair was cutting wood, relaxing and riding their ATVs in the area.

“Ronnie loved his ATVs. That was what he did on the weekend,” Ball said. “He lived a good life and I guess if he wanted to go in any way, that’s the way he would have wanted it — fast and furious.”

Blue Hills RCMP were first dispatched to the accident at 12:50 p.m. on Saturday.

Initial investigation revealed that the RZR was travelling at a high rate of speed in a ditch beside Provincial Road 340 when it came to an embankment. The slope of the embankment combined with the rate of speed caused the RZR to fly through the air. The landing resulted in serious injuries to the two men, who were wearing seatbelts and helmets.

RCMP Cpl. Mike Boychuk said the crash was confirmed by a witness.

“It’s an unfortunate incident and these machines are not indestructible and if you get into a bad situation, this is what can happen regardless of whether you are wearing helmets or seatbelts,” Boychuk said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

“They were both good guys and you don’t find those guys all the time,” Ball said.
