A historic plane that flew during the Second World War is now heading to CFB Shilo.
The plane, a Taylorcraft Auster MKV, flew three combat missions in 1945 with Canadian gunners in the pilot’s seat, and is now on its way to the RCA Museum, which purchased it in Britain earlier this year.
The Royal Canadian Air Force helped out by airlifting the Auster across the Atlantic by squeezing it into the belly of a Hercules — making the trip the longest and fastest the Auster had ever flown.
Then, it was loaded onto a truck, and it’s currently on its way to Shilo.
The museum expects to have the plane on display in February and March 2014. The space is currently being used for the “Wars in Yugoslavia” exhibit for the rest of the year.
The RCA Museum, located at Shilo, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
