Brandon’s provincial election candidates will get into the nitty-gritty of how their parties plan to address Manitoba’s $11-billion municipal infrastructure deficit behind closed doors tomorrow.

As part of its “Putting Communities First” campaign, the Association of Manitoba Municipalities is hosting an invite-only roundtable discussion with provincial election candidates on the issue of infrastructure Wednesday afternoon in Brandon at the Victoria Inn.

The intent of the forum is to provide a pre-selected panel of business people, elected officials and community-minded citizens with the opportunity to grill each candidate on whether their party would be willing to commit to placing one per cent of the provincial sales tax, above and beyond what is already funnelled to municipalities, in a dedicated provincial fund to deal with the growing municipal infrastructure deficit.

The AMM estimates that would yield at least $239 million each year that could be used to address communities’ infrastructure needs.

Confirming their attendance at tomorrow’s event so far have been Brandon West candidates Jim Murray (NDP), Reg Helwer (Progressive Conservative) and George Buri (Liberal).

Brandon East Liberal candidate Shaun Cameron and Brandon East Progressive Conservative candidate Mike Waddell will also attend.

Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell is out of town this week on personal matters and is unable to attend.

The forum is set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m at the Victoria Inn.

It is closed to the public. However, it is open to media.
