Brandon’s provincial NDP and Progressive Conservative candidates have agreed to attend a town hall forum hosted by Disability Matters: Vote 2016.
Initially, only the NDP’s Drew Caldwell (Brandon East) and Linda Ross (Brandon West) indicated they would attend the March 22 event. But on Friday, the organizing committee received word that Progressive Conservative candidates Len Isleifson (Brandon East) and Reg Helwer (Brandon West) will also attend. Brandon East Liberal candidate Vanessa Hamilton has declined.
She will represent the Liberal party at the Winnipeg Disability Matters forum on March 31.
“Unfortunately, my schedule is really full with debates right now … and I really need to get to the doors,” Hamilton said.
She said she hopes people can tune into the live-stream of the March 31 forum, which will be shown at Avis’s Place (24 Sixth St.) from 10 a.m. to noon.
“I’ve been meeting a lot of people who have disabilities and who work with people with disabilities and so I’m catching them at the door and hearing their concerns,” Hamilton said.
Kim Longstreet, chairperson of the Brandon Constituency Committee, said the invitation will remain open for the event, to be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the West End Community Centre.
“We do have our own constituents in our community here who would like to hear from their candidates, and (Hamilton) is more than welcome to participate in our community’s event,” Longstreet said.
“It’s very important that they take this opportunity to speak to our persons in our community who would really want to hear from them and learn more about who they are.”
Disability Matters: Vote 2016, a public awareness campaign, is a joint initiative of Abilities Manitoba and Barrier-Free Manitoba.
“The goal of the campaign is to support people with disabilities to learn about their candidates and be supported to vote if they need accommodation,” a press release stated. “A big part of the campaign is to work with the political parties to respond to key priorities and gain commitment on these issues.”
