A new family-oriented event that filled the Canada Games Sportsplex with smiling faces seems to be a hit.
Hundreds turned out for the first Family Fun Day, which was held on Monday.
"What a great event," said Brandonite Denise Cox, who attended with her two young sons and daughter. "We’re just having a great time."
Parents and kids could enjoy a host of activities for the price of regular Sportsplex admission, or $15 per family.
Inside the building, smiling kids tried their hand at carnival-style games such as ring toss, and bounced in an inflatable castle. There was also a magic show and public swim session. Outside, they competed in a street hockey tournament.
The event seemed popular, as Sportsplex clerk Eva Cameron estimated 500 people attended.
"Actually, it’s bigger than we thought," Cameron said. "It’s bigger and it’s busier than we ever imagined."
"We wanted to promote more family days," she said, explaining a family-oriented event was held on New Year’s Day and expects others will be held at Easter and Thanksgiving. "Just to get families together and out and using the facility."
Cameron said it’s hoped that Family Fun Day will be held annually.
Cox said it was great to have something for families to do when parents had the day off work for Louis Riel Day.
The admission price was a deal too, she said, especially considering the prizes her kids had amassed playing carnival games.
"I just can’t believe all the prizes they’re giving the kids," said Cox, whose children — Ian, Elizabeth, and Aaron — managed to collect a haul of skipping ropes, a Slinky, a stuffed toy animal and other playthings.
