* 8 a.m. — The Arabian Horse Association’s Canadian National championship will take place at the Keystone Centre with competition times of 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

* 9 a.m. — Skydive Manitoba is coming to Brandon! Tandem or solo jumps will be available at Brandon airport from 9 a.m. to sunset. Reservations are required to book a jump. To book, call 204-799-5867 or email info@skydivemanitoba.com for full details.

* 5 p.m. — Virden hosts a kickoff to Rodeo Weekend. The streets are blocked off for a pre-rodeo celebration including a barbecue, pony rides, mechanical bull rides, human chuckwagon races, fashion show and much more for the whole family. Everyone welcome to join the fun.

* 7 p.m. — Music in the Parks presents Mauritius Otentik in Rideau Park.

* 8 p.m. — The Dust Poets will play at the Onanole Community Centre. Tickets are $16 and are available in advance at Poor Michael’s Bookshop. For more info, call 848-4087.

Friday (August 19)

* 6:30 p.m. — Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze featuring bull riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling will take place at the Virden multiplex followed by the Coors Light Corral in the Virden multiplex banquet hall from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

* 7:30 p.m. — Meet the Artist — Carolyn Gray at Poor Michael’s Bookshop in Onanole. Carolyn will talk about turning ideas into prose and read from the draft of her new book, “Screaming Mimi.” Free admission.

Saturday (August 20)

* 8 a.m. — Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze starts with a pancake breakfast at Legion Hall, followed by a parade at 10 a.m., high school rodeo at 9 a.m., 3D barrel racing 3 p.m., draft horse futurity obstacle course, 3 p.m., rodeo 6:30 p.m., dance featuring Electric Angel at 10 p.m. at the curling rink.

* 10 a.m. — Riverbank Discovery Centre Farmers’ Market takes place at the Discovery Centre until 1 p.m.

* 11 a.m. — Halloween comes early to Clear Lake! Get your costumes ready and come celebrate Boo in the Park with trick-or-treating starting at 11 a.m. at participating Wasagaming businesses. Haunted house will be open from 1-3 p.m. in the Park Theatre and an evening movie will be also available in Park Theatre.

* 1:30 p.m. — Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing will take place in Holland.

* 2 p.m. — Harvest Sun Music Festival will take place in Kelwood in support of agriculture in our region. Entertainment for today includes The Rob Waddell Band, Fire and Smoke, children’s performance by Washboard Hank, The Farmers, JD Edwards Band, Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, The Liptonians and Nathan. * 6 p.m. — A free outdoor concert to celebrate Parks Canada Centennial will take place at Clear Lake with Emerson Drive and special guests Keith and RenĂ©e as well as the Latin rhythms of Trio Bembe.

Entertainment for today includes The Mike Koop Band, Still Standing, The Puppet Folk (in the big tent), Moody Manitoba Workshop hosted by Keri Latimer and Rick Neufeld, The McKillops, Trio Bembe, Dust Poets, Deep Dark Woods and Chic Camine. * 1 p.m. — Come join the Souris Glenwood Multicultural Festival street party on Crescent Avenue in Souris. Enjoy cultural food such as Mexican, Scottish, Colombian, Filipino, English and Ukrainian as well as ethnic entertainment from The Island Vibe dance group, a Scottish piper and Ukrainian and Filipino dancers as well as many children’s activities. * 1:30 p.m. — Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing will take place in Holland.

* 2 p.m. — “To Winnie with Love” features Janet Field-Moase and Susan Harper in concert at St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Dessert party to follow. Limited tickets available for $15 by calling 727-3393.

At the clubs

* Lady of the Lake pub — Chameleon Tom Dowden’s Jazzy Horns provide entertainment on Thursday; Enjoy the $5 Taco Bar on Friday from 4-6 p.m. then Holly Walker hits the piano from 6-8 p.m. followed up with some folk noir with F&M at 9 p.m.; A private wedding party takes place on Saturday. Cafe closes to the public at 3:30 p.m.

* Houstons Niteclub — Thursdays is Ladies’ Night featuring a DJ and free cover charge for the ladies all night; Groove Kitchen takes the stage on Friday.

At the galleries:

* The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba — Free guided tours hosted every Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tours offered every half hour. In the main gallery: A new exhibition “Bird Radio and the Eames Chair Lounge” by artist Bill Burns runs until Sept. 10. In the community gallery: “Raised Eyebrows: Weird, Strange and Wonderful Album Covers” from the collection of Tony Reid, until Aug. 27.

* The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum at CFB Shilo — A temporary exhibit of portions of the Manitoba Gallery is open and will run until Aug. 30. Hours of operation beginning 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Call 765-3000 extension 3570 for information and to book tours.

* The Daly House Museum — Come browse inside a heritage home that was built by Thomas Mayne Daly, first mayor of Brandon in 1882. We have a new exhibit named “Shades of White” which is a collection of wedding dresses that spans 1875 to 1970. * 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum — Come check our “on loan” Order of Canada medal as well as many other military artifacts at the Brandon Armoury. Open on Tuesdays 9 -11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

* The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum — Vintage aircraft, tunics, caps, radio equipment and more await. Admission at the door. Open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily.

* PASiG DESiGNS Art Gallery — The gallery is open Monday to Friday for the exhibition. Daily hours will be posted online at pasigdesigns.com/gallery and at 1009 Princess Ave.

* The 2010-11 Arts West Travelling Gallery — The travelling gallery will be on display at Shoal Lake Library until Aug. 22.

* The Brandon General Museum and Archives — Located in the old Manitoba Telephone Building at 19 Ninth St. with the exhibit “A Firm Foundation — Brandon’s Architectural Heritage.” This exhibit will feature images of many of Brandon’s architectural gems. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 1-4 p.m. and also on Cruise Nights from noon to 2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.

* Aug. 27 — Subway Asessippi Folk n’ Fest as Asessippi Resort features music by Fish and Bird, Swamp Gas, Tailwind and more. Gates open at 2 p.m. Bring your lawn chair. Tickets: adults advance $25 or at the gate $30; youth (6-17) $15. Advance tickets available online or by calling 564-2000.

* Aug. 27 — Grand opening of the Wawanesa Waterpark starts at 1 p.m. with the ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m. and includes a carnival on 4th “Main” Street, beer gardens, barbecue and a street dance with music by Pop Vegas and of course fireworks! Tickets are $20 and are available at all local Wawanesa businesses.

* Sept. 9 — To all the Souris flood volunteers and those who would like to show their appreciation for their efforts, come join the party on Crescent Avenue West overlooking the bowl of Victoria Park at 7 p.m. and enjoy pork on a bun and refreshments, live music by Good to Go, and fireworks at dusk. Rain date is Sept. 10.

* Sept. 27 — Red Green’s Wit and Wisdom Tour will be at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets available at the auditorium ticket office or by calling 728-9510.

* Oct. 1-2 — Manitoba Provincial Plowing Match will take place four miles south of the junction of Highway No. 1 and No. 250. Juniors start at 9 a.m. daily; horses start at 11 a.m. daily; seniors at 1 p.m. daily. Tractor pulling takes place on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.

* Oct. 4 — James Ehnes, violin and Andrew Armstrong, piano return to the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium for exquisite chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $23 for adults; $15 for seniors; $12.50 for students and are available at the WMCA box office 728-9510 or on line at ticketurtle.com.
