A Brandon entrepreneur was one of 20 Manitobans awarded financial and educational support to help develop his technology-driven business.

Scott Hayward, owner of MyFuneralDecision.com, was selected for the TechFutures program.

The website connects people with funeral homes, providing a platform to allow people to pre-arrange or schedule a funeral.

The program offers $3,000 in financial assistance, as well as startup training and business counselling from Entrepreneurship Manitoba.

“Young Manitobans are creating innovative businesses that will be key to growing and maintaining a strong, competitive economy,” Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief said.

“We know the path of a new entrepreneur is not an easy one. Programs like TechFutures are there to help cultivate fresh ideas and invest in our young people, supporting them as they make their new idea a reality.”

Seventeen of the 20 winners were from Winnipeg, including a home-use breast imaging device for monitoring breast health in women and men, an electronic labelling device that tracks food items and reduces waste and a hands-free driving aid that provides real-time alerts to drivers for a variety of road hazards and speed zones.

Hayward and his partner Colton Easton also secured money and in-kind prizes at a boot camp hosted by Innovate Manitoba in the summer.
