Four of the five candidates in Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa have signed on for a 90-minute debate scheduled for Oct. 8.

Presented by The Brandon Sun and Westman Communications Group, the debate will take place at 7 p.m. at the Riverdale Community Centre in Rivers.

The debate will be broadcast live on WCG-TV and CKLQ radio and will feature a panel consisting of Brandon Sun reporter Charles Tweed, CKLQ/Star FM news director Clay Young and Brandon University political science associate Prof. Kelly Saunders.

Green party candidate Kate Storey, independent Inky Mark, Conservative incumbent Robert Sopuck and NDP candidate Laverne Lewycky have all confirmed their attendance.

Liberal candidate Ray Piché said he is still not sure if he will be able to participate in the debate, due to work obligations.

“My problem is, I still have to do my provincial job right now, so that’s a bit of a dilemma for me here,” Piché said. “So I’m not able to commit to too much right now. I’m trying to get rid of … some work for my provincial job.”

Piché said he will confirm one way or the other by next week.

“After the long weekend, I should be back on schedule, and I should get a better idea of where we’re at and what we’re going to be doing,” he said.

Piché works with Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries as a licensing and permit adviser, which takes him across Westman.

“Because of my work, it’s been kind of hard to do as much as I want to do, but I’m getting quite a bit done,” he said. “Every evening we’re doing something, so it’s just been go, go, go … I’ve got an awesome team, which really makes a big difference.”

Piché plans to take holidays soon, which will allow him to focus his attention solely on the campaign.

A debate is also being scheduled for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa candidates by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce. This debate is slated for Oct. 6.
