Environment Canada confirmed yesterday that Brandon set a hot-weather record on Wednesday, edging past the 1972 mark by two-tenths of a degree.
On Aug. 29, 1972, the highest temperature recorded in Brandon was 36.7 C — but Brandon squeaked past that around 4 p.m. Wednesday, when the temperature hit 36.9 C.
Brandon was one of several Manitoba communities to break records that day:
• Carberry smashed its 1996 mark of 29 C by hitting 36.8 C.
• Melita soared past its own 1996 mark of 30.1 C with a 36.1 C.
• Pilot Mound, at 35.5 C, was half a degree warmer than its 35 C record from 1961.
• Shoal Lake hit 34.1 C, well up from the 28.8 C it saw in 1996.
• Wasagaming baked under 34.8 C temperatures, about a degree warmer than the 33.9 C from 1972.
McCreary, which hit 36.5 C yesterday, was just one-tenth of a degree shy of its 1972 record.
Notably, Canadian hot spot Dauphin, which hit a scorching 37.9 C Wednesday at the Dauphin airport, wasn’t credited with a record. Environment Canada says at least 15 years of data are required for official records.
