City procedure has lengthened the waiting game for demolition of the Brown Block property on 10th Street in Brandon.

Though the city issued an order for the structure to be demolished under its property standards and building safety bylaw on July 15, the bylaw specifically states that upon receipt of the order by registered mail, the owner is allowed three weeks in which to correct the non-conformance.

As proof of service was received by the city on July 27, the property’s majority shareholders, Winnipeg-based Noniko Investments, have until Aug.16 to begin demolition.

The bylaw also states that the last day of the order can be postponed if the owner has shown they are making reasonable efforts to correct the non-conformance.

As of late Thursday, no progress report had been presented to the city by Noniko or Sussex Realty, the property management group acting on Noniko’s behalf.

In the event that no progress on a timeline is made by Aug. 16, the city already has plans to employ a third-party demolition crew to go in and demolish the building, the cost of which will then be billed to the property owner.

Since the order to maintain was issued on the Brown Block last month, Sussex Realty has refused to return the Sun’s calls for comment on the issue.

It was only on July 29 that the 100-block of 10th Street was reopened to traffic, after four-and-a-half months of being closed due to perceived public danger.
