WINNIPEG — A 49-year-old woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for randomly slashing a Winnipeg store clerk in the neck.
Delores Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the November 2011 incident at Pals Supermarket.
The Crown dropped a more serious charge of attempted murder, based largely on her state of extreme intoxication at the time.
Provincial court Judge Rocky Pollack called Williams “a scary and dangerous person” as he agreed to a joint recommendation from Crown and defence lawyers.
Williams was convicted of manslaughter in 1992 for stabbing her husband to death and she has numerous other convictions, much of which her lawyer blamed on drug and alcohol addiction.
The 30-year-old supermarket clerk suffered serious injuries but has made a full physical recovery, but court heard she still has emotional scars.
“This was a moment she didn’t sign up for when she took a daytime cashier job,” Pollack said Thursday.
Several customers grabbed Williams after the stabbing and held her for police.
“I’d like to say I’m sorry for what I did to her,” Williams said Thursday in court while sobbing loudly.
On the day of the attack, Williams says she drank a bottle of vodka and took several pills to deal with ongoing depression over her daughter’s murder one year earlier.
She claims she “blacked out” and has no memory of attacking the clerk.
“She was raised in a family of violence,” defence lawyer Dan Manning told court.
As a child, Williams witnessed her stepfather stab her mother in the face, he said.
