WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is accusing the Opposition Progressive Conservatives of trying to Americanize the province’s political system.
Tory Leader Brian Pallister has left the door open to raising the maximum amount people can donate to political parties if he becomes premier.
Health Minister Sharon Blady says that would allow wealthy people to influence elections, similar to what is seen in the United States.
She says the NDP government has worked to buck that trend, including maintaining a cap of $3,000 per year on what individuals can donate.
But Manitoba’s cap is among the lowest in Canada — the NDP government in Alberta has a cap of $15,000.
Pallister says he would consult other political parties before making any changes.
