This is a message to Kevin Goertzen, Kris Desjarlais and Chief Chartrand.
Preventive health care is a slow process. it takes years to become really effective. Change is slow. Therefore, results from a five-year program will not show great improvements — but rather some beginnings! That funding is definitely needed.
It is time that we all look at the importance of illness prevention measures by promoting healthy and healthier lifestyles to improve the Métis health stats as well as that of the general population. Health-care costs can be reduced. This is a cost-saving solution.
If we do not move on improving health status and continue to only look at illness and hospitalizations — very long terms for some — the health cost can only increase. Where does that money come from?
Of course there does need to be an analysis, but also to look at long-term results that can and will happen, given time and resources.
It is not easy to change lifetime habits and choices but some results will be evident in the current adult population.
What is needed to really make a change is to look to the future by establishing good healthy ideas and programs for the younger parents and children.
Look to the future, promote health, prevent illness, and decrease health-care costs.
