Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 29/07/2011 (5566 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

In a recent letter to the editor, Stuart Briese and Cliff Graydon, MLAs from Ste. Rose and Emerson, are clearly playing politics with the flood and its impacts on producers.

Instead of spreading fear, they should be providing information on the important programs and resources we have put in place to support producers in this exceptional year.

Our NDP government is delivering when producers need it most. This is not about making promises, but putting real programs in place that are providing relief right now.

For producers along Lake Manitoba, we have designed exceptional programming that covers costs for temporary facilities, feed and transportation.

We are also making payments for restoration for damaged infrastructure, agricultural inventory, personal property and improved perennial forage land.

In the Shoal Lakes area, we are delivering a program that includes a buy-out provision for those facing high waters.

Producers in other areas of the province are receiving support under the $194-million Manitoba 2011 AgriRecovery Program, which includes feed and transportation assistance, forage restoration and greenfeed support to ensure feed for cattle over winter.

These programs will provide significant assistance to producers through the summer and winter months, and I encourage producers to call their local Go Office to get more details on other supports available to them.

When we announced the 2011 AgriRecovery Program, Jay Fox, president of Manitoba Beef Producers, thanked the NDP government saying, “They have listened to us and addressed the very obvious need in the livestock sector … It’s a comprehensive package that addresses all parts of the industry.”

The MLAs from Ste. Rose and Emerson appear out of step with the industry and seem set on spreading fear and uncertainty regarding this assistance.

I want to assure cattle producers and all producers in our province that your NDP government remains committed to assisting you and all Manitobans as you build and recover from this year’s unprecedented flooding.
