If the Brandon Chamber of Commerce ever needed a strong communicator at its helm, it was over the past year.
And the business lobby group received that and more with broadcast executive Cam Clark.
“Cam was faced with a variety of challenges,” incoming president Nate Andrews said at the changeover ceremony yesterday.
“Using his media savvy ... he was able to articulate some well-worded letters to the paper and some well-spoken words to radio and television on behalf of our chamber.”
Clark’s term included the 2011 provincial election, a 45-day strike at Brandon University, a controversial city budget and internal staff changes, which included chamber GM Nathan Peto leaving to work for the city.
More recently, issues facing the chamber have included increased spending allowances for cross-border shoppers, the return of the casino debate and the possibility of regular air service with WestJet.
“We’ve had quite a full year at the chamber,” Clark, general manager of CKLQ/Star FM radio, told the noon-hour crowd at the Royal Oak Inn.
“Post-flood recovery was one of those key issues that was handled (by the chamber) really, really well.”
One year ago, outgoing chamber president PJ Crane said he was confident Clark would build on the positive relationship he was able to forge with the newly elected city council before and during the flood fight.
And despite that relationship no doubt being tested during the rocky budget process this year, we feel Clark’s even temperament and wise words prevented what could have been a nasty falling-out.
We trust incoming president Andrews will further enhance the chamber’s working relationship with the city.
After all, we expect the chamber to be more than just a watchdog on taxation. We need it to be an engaged partner in the city’s forward progress and continued growth.
