We can do it on our own
I don’t support the idea of a joint bid for the Canada Games. I was involved with the 1997 Games as well as the Pan-Am Games and World Junior Hockey tournament. If the games are a joint venture, I have no doubt that they will be mainly a Winnipeg event, which will be largely ignored in the big city, and Brandon will be a small satellite site. For the Games to be as successful as they were in 1997, they should be in a small city.
Not enough time
Re: Feb. 14 Brandon Sun, “Three Years Fatal Crash.” I cannot believe this guy only got three years. Where is our justice? This person had been in trouble before with his drinking and driving but did not seem to learn his lesson. To me, he should have got 10 to 15 years. There are a lot of people who don’t have a good childhood but have gotten on with their lives and don’t sit around drinking and in the end take someone’s life. Where do you get the money for a weekend of heavy binge drinking? Maybe it is hard-working people who gave you the money for your drinking. Booze is not cheap.
Chief’s in charge
It was excellent to see in the Sun that the new youth minister for the NDP government visited Brandon and the Neelin off-campus program. Kevin Chief is a smart fella and he is the future leader of the NDP in Manitoba and maybe Canada.
You’re welcome
I really don’t mind donating items to a second-hand shop but sure would appreciate a friendly smile and maybe a small thank you from the staff. All I have ever experienced is stern faces that look at you as if you are bothering them. I dropped off items a few days ago and felt like I was putting them out and did not even get a thank you for my items I gave them. The reason you are in business is because of donations such as mine. If you are not happy volunteering, then don’t.
Great photos
The Sun is doing a really top job in capturing the grace and excitement found at the Brandon Festival of the Arts. Almost every day there’s a fine selection of photos showing what the best talent some of our young people have to display. Excellent work!
Advertise the penalty
The RCMP should not expect marijuana grow operations to stop or slow down if the RCMP are going to keep on advertising how many thousands of dollars street value each seizure contains. If they really want to stop these grow operations, they should be broadcasting the penalties these lawbreakers suffer.
Tougher laws needed for cellphone users
I agree with the remarks made in Feb. 16 paper about cellphone use. I totally agree that the fine should at least be double — $500 plus and even taking the licence away for a period of time and even some demerits on their licence. Obviously the $200 fine isn’t hitting home. You can be out at any day and you will see half a dozen people still doing it freely. They really have to crack down and get tougher.
Clean up service
Why in restaurants do they put coffee cups and spoons on tables? People touch them. Tables are not clean. It is a very dirty thing to do especially when they don’t wash tables that have doilies on them. Does it take much effort to take the cups to the tables as they serve coffee?
