Downtown will not live or die without the Strand
More about the Strand project — is the BFMAS not willing to take any blame for this debacle? The board sat on its hands waiting for the government cheques to roll in, made no attempt to fundraise on its own and wonders why taxpayers are upset! Come on! It’s like the board thought that the cheques were a given. With taxes going up in Manitoba (gas) and the federal government cutting jobs, BFMAS just held their hands out!
Thanks for the tribute to mothers
I certainly don’t always agree with Shari Decter Hirst, however, I would like to commend her on a very well-written personal tribute to her mother and how her words and thoughts made us all for at least a moment reflect upon our own mothers. Thank you, Shari.
The facts of a casino in Brandon
For those who believe that Brandon would benefit greatly from having a casino, I can’t help wonder if these people realize that the province has stated that any additional casinos built in Manitoba would have to be First Nations-owned and operated. Casinos would need to be placed on First Nations land. The City of Brandon would not collect any of the profits from the casino because the city would not own it. The City of Brandon would be on the hook for extra costs, such as police services, needed for the additional crime that comes from having a casino in our midst. I would welcome a casino in the Westman area as long as the profits and expenses are shared fairly by all parties involved.
Virden Aud Theatre thriving — why not the Strand, too?
This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend a concert in the beautifully restored theatre in Virden — a true jewel in Virden. I believe it would be tragic if we lost the old Strand Theatre. It would be a perfect venue for small folk or jazz music or live theatre concerts. Perhaps a church congregation could rent it on Sundays. Virden is currently on a circuit receiving artists many times a year. We are not on this circuit as rental fees are far too high for these more intimate-style concerts. I am hoping a few people of financial means will help to cover the costs, offering this as a gift to the city.
A local arts theatre could survive
I am not NDP. I have heard so many complaints in the past that Drew Caldwell does nothing for us and now that his wife is working in a non-profit organization and he happens to be an MLA ... now all of a sudden you think he has influence? Which is it? Leave him alone, this is a good cause! We have so many arts and movies and theatre productions put on locally, so this would be wonderful. So get off your high horse and stop attacking wives just because they work on the same projects as their husbands.
