Opinion

What would Tommy do?

Signs in Brandon University Faculty Association’s headquarters ask, “What would Tommy do?” Tommy Douglas was a social democrat who preached against injustice. He would “not” be holding students hostage. If BUFA agreed to arbitration, our students would be back in classes right away, not losing a second month of classes. Tommy Douglas would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what BUFA was doing to his beloved Brandon University.

Put officers on the road

Aren’t these new RCMP Criminal Crash Investigation Teams a case of closing the barn door after the horse is out? Put these 33 officers out on highway patrol and maybe it would prevent some of the accidents. Being able to say “this happened because …” is not going to help anything.

Where ARE Shari’s friends now?

Last winter, Mayor Shari Decter Hirst’s NDP premier friend was all too happy to skip out here and pose on our dikes when the province was standing up and spending money on flood prevention. Now that the city faces a similar disaster with the BU strike — of economic and reputational proportions — Greg Selinger and his ministers and MLA Drew Caldwell are refusing to take action. We should all be disgusted with the NDP in this case.

Clean up your act

My heartfelt thanks to the city’s sanitation department for the cleaning of my back lane where containers of leftover food were left to fester for 12 days despite having called bylaw enforcement. Anyone else have this problem in their back lane? When are the citizens who are responsible for such messes going to be charged? Do we not have bylaws for these incidents and why are they not being enforced? Time to get tough. Rotting food, is that not a health hazard?

Careful you don’t lose your rights

If BUFA keeps this up, they’ll strike away their (and every other professor’s) right to strike in Manitoba. About time in my opinion. What they provide to our future generations is an essential service.

This bullying has to stop

BUFA is nothing more than schoolyard bullies who have been targeting the administration and demanding that they hand over their lunch money. As the administration’s lawyer said, they gave in to BUFA in order to end the strike three years ago, and that was a mistake. It was a mistake because BUFA continued to bully for lunch money. Now administration is standing up to the bullies, looking them in the eye and saying no. This is exactly what we teach students in our elementary, middle and high schools to do if they are targeted by bullies.
