The Brandon Barbarians Division 1 men’s rugby team lived up to their goal of wanting to be more aggressive offensively in Sunday’s Rugby Manitoba matches against the host Winnipeg Saracens.
The Barbarians exploded for 12 tries as they dismantled the Saracens 79-22.
Sean Common had two tries, eight conversions and one drop goal for Brandon (6-3) while Liam Hammersley, Colin Phillips and Owen Hagan added two tries each.
Thomas Roche, Michael Birch, Brad Lewis and Nathan Peto all scored single tries.
“We haven’t been happy with our performance the last three weeks,” said club president Jon Fitzpatrick.
“We kind of stepped it up this week in training and set some goals for ourselves. One of them was to be far more aggressively in our attack and we did that very effectively today. We supported really well up the sides. We just ran hard straight lines and we overwhelmed the other team. We kept them on their back foot and kept the pressure on them.”
Sunday was also a good day for the Division 2 men’s Barbarians (3-4-1) as they snapped their four-game losing streak with a 27-15 victory over the host Saracens.
Peto scored a pair of tries with Cory Elliott and Max Gaudet adding singles. Andrew Halliday had one try and one conversion.
“It’s a big relief,” Fitzpatrick said.
“The guys worked really hard. It’s a huge relief for all the guys getting that win. The end of our holiday season has ended for a lot of our guys, so it’s one of the first games in a while where we’ve had our proper starting 15 on the field and it definitely showed.
“It was a good character win for the guys. Our opposition was a pretty physical team, so we were able to step up. … It was a great win for the guys.”
Meanwhile, the short-handed women’s Barbarians fell a converted try shy of completing a Brandon sweep on Sunday as they lost 34-28 to the host Saracens.
Cassandra Lesiuk, Krissy Loewen, Jamie George and Amanda Williams all scored tries while Steph Dornn added four conversions for the Barbarians (2-5).
The squad started the game with 14 players and finished with 13 after losing another one to injury early in the contest.
All three Barbarian teams were supposed to play their Winnipeg Wasps counterparts on Saturday, but those game were postponed. Both men’s squads will make up the games on Aug. 11.
A made-up date has not been finalized for the women’s team.
