Rob Fowler took a tumble Saturday at the GP Car and Home Players’ Championship in Grande Prairie, Alta., but his Brandon-based rink still managed to count playoff dollars in the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling season-ending event.
Fowler separated his left shoulder after his broom broke and he fell to the ice two shots into the extra end of a C-side game against Steve Petryk of Calgary. Third Allan Lyburn of Brandon threw the final two shots for a 6-5 win that enabled Fowler’s team to win $7,000.
Fowler watched from the sidelines last night as his rink lost6-5 to Niklas Eden of Sweden in the first round of the playoffs.
"I just stayed off to the side," said Fowler, wearing a sling after a trip to the hospital. "I didn’t want to be a distraction to the guys, so I just watched from the press box area and let the guys do their thing.
"It would have been a lot tougher if we didn’t hold on to win the C-side qualifier to get into the playoffs. Allan Lyburn stepped up and made a draw to the eight foot, which meant that we won some prize money. But it would have been nice to be out there tonight to finish off the season."
Fowler, 35, fought off pain before he got medical attention.
"By the time I got to the hospital, it was quite painful," he said. "They had to put me under and pop the shoulder back into its socket. I feel good now that it’s fixed, but it was just very painful when it happened. It was a really freak accident. You’ve got nothing saving you when the broom breaks."
In the semifinals late last night, Eden faced Glenn Howard while Kevin Martin went up against Kevin Koe.
In other quarter-final results, Howard defeated Brandon product Mike McEwen 5-3, Martin edged world champion Jeff Stoughton 5-4 in an extra end and Koe defeated Braeden Moskowy 6-2.
The Koe rink includes former Brandonite Nolan Thiessen.
In the women’s final Saturday, Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones beat Ottawa’s Rachel Homan 7-5.
