Westman players take honours

A dozen Westman high school basketball players received awards at the Manitoba Basketball Coaches’ Association graduating all-star banquet in Winnipeg on Saturday.

Glenboro’s Bryce Watson was named the A male player of the year, while Killarney’s Cody Milliken was the AA male player of the year. Keegan Robinson from Hamiota was the A female player of the year, while Kinsley Ransom was named the AA female athlete of the year.

Crocus Plainsmen forward Brittany Wiebe was named to the female all-Manitoba team. Quinn Thacker from Dauphin and MacGregor’s Kyle Buhler were named to the A/AA/AAA male all-Manitoba first all-star team with Neelin’s Theo Farough named to the second team. Elton’s Brooke Huculak was named to the A/AA/AAA female all-Manitoba first all-star team, with Hamiota’s Kailan Robinson, Goose Lake’s (Roblin) Joy Becker and Souris’ Morgan Husband making the second team.

Westman coaches were also honoured at the event with Dauphin’s Trevor Beals named the AAA male coach of the year, Killarney’s Terry Beazley the AA male coach of the year, Boissevain’s Keith Forsyth the AA female coach of the year and Hamiota’s John Zilkey the A female coach of the year. Zilkey also received a 20-year service award while Grandview’s Marc Giasson received a 15-year service award.

At the all-star games, Crocus Plains’ Justin Arthurson missed the final shot of the AAAA boys game in North’s 98-96 quadruple-overtime loss to the South. Team North beat Team South 70-66 in the AAAA girls game. Brittany Wiebe, Jodie Baker and Mary Thomson all played for Team South.

Team North — which was coached by Killarney’s Beazley and Beals and featured Watson, Milliken and Thacker — beat Team South 98-88 in the A/AA/AAA boys all-star game. Team South featured Buhler and Neelin’s Mark Jacobson. Meanwhile, Zilkey coached Team North to a 70-66 win over Team South in the A/AA/AAA girls game. Team North’s players included Becker, Neepawa’s Adrienne Schmall and Hamiota’s Brooke Mathison. Huculak, Husband, Glenboro’s Jaymee Rogers, Elton’s Taylor Ward and Neelin’s Kira Tufts played on Team South.
