Nolan Patrick scored the winner and extended his goal-scoring streak to 11 games as the Brandon Wheat Kings came from behind twice to beat the Kootenay Ice 4-2 at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook on Wednesday.

The Wheat Kings (38-18-3-2) sit first in the Western Hockey League’s East Division, seven points up on the Prince Albert Raiders (33-20-7-1), who beat the Swift Current Broncos 3-2 in overtime.

In the Eastern Conference race, Brandon is now one points behind the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who lost 9-8 in a shootout to the visiting Regina Pats last night.

“It was a solid effort,” said Brandon head coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon. “We played pretty well from start to finish, two shots against in the second, four shots against in the third.”

After Brandon failed to cash in on several early opportunities, Kootenay scored first when Roman Dymachuk sent a pass out front to Austin Wellsby, whose backhand eluded Brandon starter Logan Thompson.

Brandon defenceman James Shearer tied the game with his third of the season midway through the second on a snapshot by Kootenay starter Wyatt Hoflin, but the Ice struck back quickly with Jared Legien sending a second chance shot under the crossbar, after the original attempt was blocked.

The Wheat Kings tied it again when the puck came out to Kale Clague, who sent a wrister over a sprawling Hoflin as Brandon outshot Kootenay 18-2 in the second period.

Brandon took its first lead when Patrick scored on a power play early in the third period. He had already hit a crossbar and post in the game.

John Quenneville received a gift 8:32 into the third period when a Kootenay defender turned the puck over to him within a few feet of the net. Quenneville quickly converted to put his team up 4-2.

Thompson stopped 13 shots, with Hoflin making 36 saves.

ICINGS: The Wheat Kings scratched Connor Gutenberg (lower-body injury, week-to-week) and Linden McCorrister (upper-body injury, day-to-day), along with Jaeger White and Garrett Armour (healthy scratches) … The Wheat Kings lost another bluechip prospect to college hockey on Wednesday. This time it was 2015 second rounder Sean Comrie, who has committed to the University of Denver. Brad Goethals committed to Bemidji State University on the weekend … The final tally for the Pink The Rink promotion is $31,490.
