For the second straight game, the Brandon Wheat Kings had a solid start undone by an ugly second period.
The Swift Current Broncos scored three times in the second and went on to a 5-3 victory over visiting Wheat Kings Tuesday night in the first of their three meetings this week.
“Obviously that’s the turning point,” said Wheat Kings assistant coach David Anning, whose club also gave up three goals in the middle frame of a 5-2 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday. “I thought that we came out and we had a strong first period. It was a good road period. We had everybody involved in the game, we executed our gameplan fairly well and unfortunately, that span there really bit us.”
Levi Bews scored twice for the Broncos (10-12-3-2), who jumped two points ahead of the Wheat Kings and into a tie for sixth place in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. Ryon Moser had a goal and two assists, while Reece Scarlett and Josh Derko also scored for Swift Current.
Two goals by Richard Nejezchleb couldn’t stop the Wheat Kings (11-13-2-1) from losing their third straight game and their seventh in their last eight contests. Alessio Bertaggia, back in the Brandon lineup after missing three games due to injury, set up both of Nejezchleb’s goals and also scored himself.
Bews opened the scoring on a first-period power play, but it took the Wheat Kings only 30 seconds to tie it up as Nejezchleb converted a backhand pass from Bertaggia.
The Broncos did all of their damage in the second period in a stretch of just 5:08 before stretching the lead to 5-1 in the third frame.
Nejezchleb and Bertaggia scored late and Anning said although that surge was encouraging, it didn’t erase the disappointment from Brandon’s play earlier in the game.
“Obviously we finished strong and we did some good things at the end,” he said. “The guys were buying in again and we were working hard, but it shouldn’t come to a 5-1 deficit before we turn it on.”
ONE-TIMERS: Brandon hosts Swift Current on Wednesday (7 p.m., Westman Place) … The Wheat Kings went 1-for-4 with the man advantage, but failed to kill off either of the Broncos’ power plays … Brandon G Corbin Boes made 33 stops, while Swift Current G Eetu Laurikainen made 21 saves … Wheat Kings C Tim McGauley was injured and missed the third period … Brandon scratched D Ryan Pulock (upper body, day-to-day), RW Jens Meilleur (lower body, one week), C Tyrel Seaman (upper body, week-to-week) and D Rene Hunter (ill) … Bertaggia told CKLQ he has been invited to try out for the Swiss national junior team again this year.
