What they lacked in defence, the Brandon Wheat Kings made up for with persistence in the opening game of their West Coast road trip.
The Wheat Kings came back from two-goal deficits three times in a 7-6 Western Hockey League victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday night.
Ryan Pulock had two goals and an assist, while Alessio Bertaggia also scored twice for Brandon. Tyler Yaworski and Tim McGauley each had a goal and a helper, with Ryley Miller rounding out the scoring for the Wheat Kings (6-3-1-0).
“A win is a win and it’s a good way to start the trip,” Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said. “… The guys found a way to come back, they stuck with it (and) they kept chipping away. I think it’s kind of a two-sided coin tonight. We can’t keep playing games like this. We’ve got to learn a lesson on how we’ve got to play on the road and how we’ve got to play to win games.”
Elgin Pearce had two goals and an assist for the Tigers (4-7-1-0), who got a goal and two assists from Curtis Valk. Miles Koules, Boston Leier and Chad Labelle had the other Medicine Hat goals.
After coming from behind to tie the game in the first and second periods, the Wheat Kings fell behind again early in the third, but Pulock scored on an end-to-end rush to start the rally, before Miller netted the tying goal on a point shot. Pulock blasted in another point shot for the winner 2:12 after his first goal, and only 22 seconds after Miller’s tying marker.
ONE-TIMERS: Medicine Hat went 2-for-3 on the power play, but couldn’t score on a late third-period chance. Brandon’s power play went 1-for-3 … Wheat Kings G Corbin Boes stopped 27 shots, while Tigers G Dawson MacAuley stopped 35 … Brandon LW Kord Pankewicz earned his first WHL point, assisting on Millers goal … Brandon scratched LW Richard Nejezchleb (upper body, day-to-day), LW Taylor Cooper, LW Jack Palmer and D Riley Van Horne … Medicine Hat scratches included D Alex Theriau (hip, three weeks) and C Jayden Hart (lower body, day-to-day) … The Wheat Kings continue their road trip tonight against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (7:30, CKLQ).
