Public Safety Minister Vic Toews last week applauded the co-ordinated efforts of police and intelligence forces in foiling an Ottawa-based terror plot, but said the incident underscores the burgeoning threat of homegrown terrorism.
“There is a growing concern about radicalization inside Canada — so that is, homegrown terrorism,” said the federal rep for the Provencher riding in Manitoba. “That is a phenomena that we have seen in many western democracies and it’s a relatively new phenomena that we must be very vigilant about.”
Postmedia News reported that Toews called on Canadians to stand up against terrorist threats, suggesting leaders from various communities should approach the government if they have information that threatens safety.
“Canada is not immune to terrorism. We are not immune to international or homegrown radicalization. I have said this before: The threat is real, and we cannot be complacent.”
So how did the Opposition react to those comments? Liberal MP Mark Holland, the party’s public safety critic, said while homegrown terrorism is indeed a threat, the foiled plan shows police are “doing good work.”
But he had to take it one step further and criticize for the sake of hearing himself speak. He urged the Conservative government to lay off the “fear-mongering” until more information is known.
While Toews was off the mark with some of his recent comments on the Tamil refugees, we really find it difficult to conclude that his comments on this issue were out of order.
