The steep and narrow Eighth Street Bridge is safe for drivers, but it could be replaced by 2013, depending on the results of a planned consultation that the city expects to start later this year.
Coun. Erroll Black enquired about the condition of the bridge at the Aug. 16 city council meeting, saying that he had received complaints regarding both it and the First Street Bridge.
A response posted this morning on the city’s website says that both structures are safe, but recommends increased maintenance on the First Street Bridge and the rehabilitation or replacement of the Eighth Street Bridge in the next few years.
"Annual monitoring of the bridge continues to find no rehabilitation other than maintaining the riding surface in a safe condition is required," writes city engineer Ted Snure in the response. A provincial inspection of the First Street Bridge also found no problems, though the city will stress the need for more maintenance — even just cosmetic maintenance — Snure says.
Black’s original query included claims from callers that there were spots on the bridges where rebar was exposed, pieces of concrete had broken away, and that there appeared to be cracks in the deck.
The Eighth Street Bridge was closed for a full day’s repairs last Thursday. Paving work was done on the First Street Bridge over the summer.
Although the First Street Bridge falls under provincial jurisdiction, Snure writes that the city’s Engineering Department will be soliciting proposals this year for a consultation to design the rehabilitation/replacement of the Eighth Street Bridge, which is expected in 2012 and 2013.
