Dangerous winter driving conditions may have been to blame for a five-vehicle collision near Swan River yesterday afternoon that was sparked when one motorist stopped to help another.
Police, fire and emergency personnel were called to Highway 10, about five miles east of Swan River, at 4 p.m. on Oct. 26.
An east-bound Ford Explorer appears to have lost control and gone into the ditch on the south side of Highway 10, rolling over at least once. A motorist stopped to offer assistance, and a chain reaction collision involving several other vehicles occurred.
In total there were five vehicles involved:
a 2002 Chevrolet Venture
a 1996 Dodge Caravan
a 1996 Ford Explorer
a 2004 Ford Explorer
a 1999 Ford Windstar
There were three men, eight women and a three-year-old girl in the five vehicles. All 12 occupants were examined and treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the collision.
Highway conditions at the time were reported to be wet and slush covered.
Alcohol is not considered to be a factor, and seatbelts were in use at the time of the collision. The highway was closed to traffic for about one hour.
Police continue to investigate. No further information is available at this time.
