WINNIPEG — It took a DNA test to expose an attempt to defraud Manitoba Public Insurance of almost $13,000 this year.

In its annual list of Top Five auto insurance frauds, MPI tells the story of a man who vehemently denied crashing his car, which caused the airbag to deploy.

The man claimed the car had been stolen prior to the crash, and filed a vehicle damage claim for $12,900.

After testing the airbag, MPI discovered blood belonging to the owner, disproving his claim. “Mr DNA” has withdrawn his claim, MPI reported today, and also agreed to reimburse the public auto insurer $3,437 for investigative costs.

It’s one of several thousand suspicious claims reviewed by the company’s special investigations unit every year, said MPI. Over the last five years, the SIU has recovered undeserved benefits and denied fraudulent claims worth more than $50 million.

Among the other top five fraudsters was a man who, four years after the crime, admitted to lighting a vehicle on fire, and a Winkler man who fraudulently claimed to be injured and unable to work.

Anyone who suspects an auto insurance fraud can call MPI’s TIPS Line: 985-8477 or toll-free 1-877-985-8477. All tips are anonymous.
