LONDON — The best hostels in the world are in Lisbon, Portugal, according to voters for the annual Hoscar awards, who also singled out hostels in Montreal and Niagara Falls, Ont., as being the best in North America.
Travellers House, located in the centre of Lisbon, was named best overall — praised in recent reviews posted to Hostelworld.com for its cleanliness, ”super friendly staff” and welcoming atmosphere.
Lisbon Lounge Hostel was in second place and the city’s similarly named Living Lounge Hostel was in third.
Montreal Central, near the bars and cafes of that city’s Latin Quarter, was ranked the best hostel in North America, followed by ACBB Hostel Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont., in second and USA Hostels San Francisco in third.
Winners of the ninth annual awards — in full, the Hostelworld Customers Annual Ratings — were selected from 25,000 properties around the world, scoring high in six categories: fun, cleanliness, staff, security, location and character.
Hostelword, a booking site, says votes were cast by more than a million of its customers.
