THERE are only questions surrounding the death of Abdul Jemei, who died from stab wounds he suffered Wednesday night.
Winnipeg police said Jemei, 22, and a 19-year-old friend were walking on Vaughan Street near the west end of Portage Place just after 9 p.m. Wednesday when they were confronted by another man who stabbed them both.
Jemei’s friend was able to get to the hospital on his own, but Jemei collapsed on the sidewalk and was later taken to hospital, where he died.
This is Winnipeg’s eighth homicide of the year.
The friend was treated for his injuries and released.
Police say the stabbing may have been part of a robbery or the result of a fight between two groups of people. Police say they don’t believe the death is gang-related.
One man is in custody for questioning and police are reviewing surveillance footage from downtown cameras.
Friends of Jemei posted comments on his Facebook page and their own, describing the young man as well-liked with many friends, and who also enjoyed playing soccer on the field at Central Park.
“May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Abdul Jemei,” wrote Benjamin Tamana.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-8477.
