Winning the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel is starting to become a habit for William Lyburn.
Lyburn, a former Brandonite, and his team of James Kirkness, Alex Forrest and Tyler Forrest won the competitive division for the fourth straight year with a 7-4 win over Brandonite Rob Fowler in the final Sunday afternoon at the Riverview Curling Club. While he gave some credit to the Riverview Curling Club’s butter tarts for his dominance of the 121-year-old bonspiel, he really just likes the atmosphere and has a lot of fun at the event.
“I think it’s just the fact that we enjoy the people around and enjoy the people we’re playing,” said Lyburn, who now lives in Winnipeg. “Win, lose or draw, it’s about raising some money for the local curling clubs and seeing old friends you don’t normally see.”
Lyburn had a lot of luck on his side in this year’s final. Fowler’s last rocks in the fifth end and seventh end both picked up debris allowing Lyburn to score three points in the fifth and a deuce in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Lyburn, whose brother Allan plays third for Fowler, admitted he hates to see picks come into play in finals, but he knows it’s something everyone has to deal with.
“We put ourselves in good positions and they made key shots to get out of it,” said Lyburn, who qualified for the playoffs through the B-event after sleeping in and missing his A-event qualifying game against Shawn Taylor.
“They got two or three bad picks that made it a lot easier for us. I hate seeing picks out there, but that’s the game and that’s what happens and especially when you’re playing in an event like the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel, you have to expect those things. It happens.”
While Lyburn extended his championship streak at the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel, Neepawa’s Jerry Chudley put an end to a slump. Chudley and his team of Kevin Cooley, Kyle Csversko and Paul Robertson punched their tickets to the Safeway Championship by reaching the competitive division semifinals.
The foursome, which has suffered bad breaks while trying to get to provincials, qualified for the playoffs through the C event but fell 8-7 to Lyburn. Since Lyburn, Fowler and Carberry’s Rob Van Kommer, the other semifinalists, had already secured berths at other events, Chudley was awarded a spot at provincials.
“It’s very exciting,” Chudley said. “We’re really happy we pulled that off and looking forward to it. … Everything worked out well for us.”
Meanwhile in the recreation side of the bonspiel, Lester Vopni defeated Ross Granger 5-4 to win the A event title, Colin Dunbar beat Justin Rabe 9-6 to claim the B-event championship and Mark Anderson topped Norm Gamble 7-5 to become C-event champions. Randy O’Greysik won the D event with a 7-1 win over Jay Kinnaird.
